Burton, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and is the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 41,824 at the 2010 census[1]. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1824 by John Burton, who named it for himself. Burton was a young man when he founded Burton on the Rouge River as a post office and saw first-hand how railroad construction could change life in this area.[2] In 1836, Burton moved his business to what is now downtown because development there would allow him to operate more than one business at once. The original courthouse building still stands today and can be seen from many blocks away. In 1868, Burton donated land to build what became Woodward Park, which features a lake, baseball diamond, golf course, playgrounds and other recreational facilities today. The park also served as home to the Northwestern Michigan Normal School from 1875 until its closure in 1927. In 1916,[3] Burton donated $10 million towards creation of Woodward Park State Park which includes much of present day downtown including Lake Erie Boulevard and State Street. The park has since been renamed after John Fenton Burton Jr., John's son and namesake for the donation.[4] In 1922, violence between Native Americans and White settlers led to the largest forced removal in United States history known as "The Great Lakes Indian Removal Act". As most Native American nations were not parties to treaties that had granted them their lands west of the Mississippi River (eastern Ontario being one exception), large numbers of their people were forcibly removed across North America during this time period including 1 million Indians living on or near Detroit alone[5]. Most Native Americans died or were displaced during this process; however some managed to flee into Canada before they were transported back southward under military escort[6]. This event remains one of history's darkest moments for both indigenous peoples and non-native populations in Michigan.[7]

The right to vote was granted to women in 1888. In 1906, Burton's first municipal library opened with books from other libraries across America donated by local citizens and businesspeople interested in helping build Burton's infrastructure for future growth. That same year saw completion of the first sectional road in what is now downtown Burton by Henry Ford who donated $5,000 towards its construction. In 1915, Arthur Eaker became mayor after serving as alderman for six years and served until his death that year; he had been mayor pro tempore since 1912 when he first won election to office on an open ticket against incumbent Samuel Morse. Following Eaker's death however, Harry Surgen became mayor for two terms before retiring at age 70 due to health concerns unrelated to politics; he would later be elected as governor of Michigan four times but never during his career held office due to poor health). In 1933 Mayor Surgen appoints James Prentice as City Administrator effective November 1st following resignation of Mayor Wm Heddle because Prentice could not agree unanimously with all decisions made by City Council which frustrated him (Prentice would later become Mayor again after winning approval from City Council)). On January 1st 1935 Burntons first streetlight went on providing illumination throughout downtown streets at nighttime beginning a trend that continues to this day
