Burton, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Ottawa River. It is named after Burton, England, where George Washington was born in 1732. The population was 2,878 at the 2000 census. The first European to visit Burton was French explorer and trader Pierre La Salle in 1768. Heading up the river from Quebec City, he built Fort la Motte on its confluence with the Ottawa River for his own protection during the Seven Years' War (1762-1767). In 1805, American Captain John Fritchey discovered and explored what would become Burton when he led a party of men upstream from Detroit to survey an area along the river that later became Lansing County. Fritchey named it for General Edward Dearborn's military aide and friend Major Isaac Hull (1756-1824), who had accompanied him during his march through Canada in 1804-1805 as part of Dearborn's northern expansion into what are now Ontario and Michigan Territory. Dearborn also founded Lansingburgh Village on Grand River east of present day Burton; it became a city in 1865. After staying mainly near Detroit until 1834 when he moved downriver to Green Bay due to bad water conditions thereabouts, Dearborn accomplished one of America's great deeds by opening Burrard Inlet on September 12th of that year which facilitated navigation between Upper and Lower Canada without having to cross Lake Superior or enter Lake Huron through rapids or cataracts.
