Burton, Michigan is a small town in the Kalamazoo Valley of Lower Michigan. It is located on the old Burton-Kalamazoo Railroad. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. Burton is named for John Burton, an early settler and one of the incorporators of what would become Muskegon Heights in 1837. The first post office was established in 1839, and by 1850 it had grown to include parts of what are now Lansing and Grand Rapids counties. In 1872, when Lansing became a city, Burton became its second city limits census town after unincorporated White Lake Township east of Lansing. The local economy has been largely agricultural since before township incorporation; however, heavy industry began arriving after World War II with the opening of new plants associated with Ford Motor Company and other large companies south of Lansing (the latter through various acquisitions). Today's local businesses include several masonry contractors as well as a few other light manufacturing enterprises such as home builders and waste collectors.

In 1861, Burton became part of the new Michigan Territory and was renamed "Burton Heights". On January 3rd of that year, it incorporated as a city under the name "Jameson". That name lasted until 1903 when it changed to its current name which is derived from its original place name: "Burton Heights"
