Burton is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, and it was founded on December 12, 1837 by John Burton, who also named it after himself. The population was 2,651 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Burton was John Haines, who arrived in 1836 from New Hampshire. A year later, he married Sarah Church and together they started a grocery store on Main Street in downtown Burton. In 1839, Haines purchased about three-quarters of an acre (0.8 km2) of land north of the current site of the town to build a gristmill and other mills which would provide power for his businesses. In 1841, Burton's first school opened with twenty students and five teachers; this became the first public school in Michigan. In 1861, Burton had its own post office and telephone system; this service continued until 1984 when it was transferred to Lansing. In 1863, Burton's citizens voted to become part of what would become Kalamazoo County; this decision marked the beginning of their growth as a community northwest of Detroit center which continues to thrive today with over 120 businesses located within its boundaries In 1865-1866, Burton constructed two churches – oneMethodist and one Presbyterian – both now Zoroastrian temples serving as cultural landmarks in the community . On October 15th 1870 local resident George Prentice donated land east of Burton's original square (now south side business district) for a new courthouse complex that still stands today as one of America’s most beautiful buildings .
