Since the early 1800s, Burton, Michigan has been a center of firearms production and distribution. In 1819, Captain George Haggerty founded the town of Burton on the east side of the Ottawa River. He named it after Sir John Burton, an English general who had conquered India in 1757. The first store in town was built on State Street in 1828. By 1840, there were six stores and twenty-four gunsmiths in town.The manufacturing process for guns began with the creation of brass cannons by melting down cannonballs and shaping them into barrels and then completing theassembly by welding together different parts from different pieces of brass.In 1856, Samuel Colt established a factory in nearby Hartford to make revolvers for use by law enforcement officers and other government officials. Because guns were so important to these people, Colt made sure that his pistols would be serial numbered with each one so that they could be traced back to him if needed. In 1865, he started producing rifles as well but stopped when he ran out of brass for his revolvers. Burton is a town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,883 at the 2010 census. The name comes from Burton's Creek which forms part of the border between Detroit and Wayne County. Burton was incorporated as a village in 1871. It became a town in 1903. The first settler in what would become Burton was John Burkart who arrived on July 1, 1824 from Ottawa Township, Canada with his family. He and his wife Avis built a log cabin near the present day intersection of US-26 and State Road 12. They were the first people to live there and soon others followed including John Hammond (1827-1907), George Davenport (1829-1913), Lewis Cook (born about 1830), Isaac Vanderpool (1833-1920) and James Wirtz (1835-1915). In 1851, Isaac Vanderpool married Anna Heaton and they started living in what is now known as Heaton Heights neighborhood of Burton Village where they raised their five children: Adaline, Clinton Gordon Burriss Gilbert Jr., Edward Everett Gorman Sr., Josephine Hutton Burriss Heaton and Edwin Wareham Vandiver Vaught III. AnnaHeaton died childless in 1865; however her husband continued to rear six more children until his death c1950: Bertha Heaton Vandiver Koppelman(1869-1948); Franklin Burriss Gorman(1872-1945); Helen Trumpeter Burriss(1876-1964); Donald Trumpeter Burriss(born about 1880); Edwin Wareham Vandiver Vaught III.(1900-.1985). In 1861, when it was organized as a village by the Michigan Legislature for local government purposes only due to lack of land elsewhere within Wayne County for development, Burton had no tavern or other public services available aside from blacksmithing which was then an unusual activity for that time period in America because most towns at that time were founded through incorporation or purchase by wealthy landowners eager to populate their new settlements with white families. The first postmaster ever appointed by the village board was Abram Harris whose term expired on December 31st 1861 having never received service beyond issuing letters patent confirming election of justices thereof on May 7th 1862 by popular vote after approval of charter amendment passed November 26th 1860 by same body. In 1863 Jane Addams opened Hull’s Livery stable #1 on Main Street just east of its current site opposite Piquette Avenue following her arrival from Hull’s General Store located two miles away on Woodstock Road adjacent to Detroit Lakes National Forest just south of downtown Detroit where she later became famous serving as First Lady under President Woodrow Wilson during World War I before moving back into Hull’s store #2 across Piquette Avenue from 1916 to her death in 1948 following many years proprietorship there starting with Mrs Jane Addams who entertained dignitaries such as Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Franklin Roosevelt when they stopped by her store while traveling through Detroit en route to other events statewide during those days notables like William Jennings Bryan also stopped at Hull’s store at one point during his campaign season prior to meeting him inside City Hall later that day inside what is now Cadillac Place using then modern technology unavailablethen

Lead and copper mines were located nearby, supplying both local residents and trading posts along the Great Lakes region with valuable materials needed for manufacturing goods such as cannons and items used by Indians treatyually allotted to specific tribes/ bands (e.g., Ottawa). By 1800, Burton had become one of the largest cities on the Great Lakes region with over 10,000 inhabitants! In addition to its economic importance, Burton also became known as a stopover point on journeys between Detroit and Lake Superior for travelers taking advantage of favorable trade winds blowing throughattled area at this time (e.g., steamboats). In 1868-69, Commodore David Dixon sailed his ship "CSS Niagara" through Burrard Inlet while attempting to blockade Toronto harbor following Canada's admission into Confederation; this event is generally considered to have ledto Canada becoming an independent country two years later- Ontario being admitted as Québec instead! As part of their celebration of Canadian independence celebrations held throughout North America (Midsummer), many key officials from across Canada participated in festivities hosted by Mayor Waddell at City Hall square in downtown Burton on July 1st1868!
