Burton, Michigan is a small town in the Kalamazoo-Portage County area of western Michigan. It has a population of approximately 7,000 people. The township was established in 1836 and is named after Colonel George Burton, an American Revolutionary War officer who served as military governor of Canada. Since the early 1800s, Burton has been a center for gun trade and manufacturing. In 1855, John Moses Browning opened the first firearms factory in America in Burton. Burton is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 51,533 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Oakland County and one of the most populous cities in Michigan. The downtown business district served as an important cultural center until the mid-20th century when abandoned buildings accumulated and blighted the community. However, community activism has helped revive Burton over recent years through arts programming, marketing campaigns and public education efforts. Today, Burton remains a vibrant community with strong cultural traditions including traditional farming practices along with attractions such as enjoyable skiing or snowboarding opportunities available year-round.

By 1850, there were six stores and two churches in Burton. In 1861, the first railroad (the Detroit and Mackinaw Railway) reached Burton. This led to an increase in business opportunities for the town. By 1865, there were twelve businesses in Burton and it had a population of over 500 people
