Railroads brought settlers with them, who began buying land around Burton to build homes or start businesses. This led to increased traffic on Main Street and other local roads and made it easier for people to get around without having to take public transportation
Burton was first mentioned in the "Dictionary of Michigan Place Names" in 1837. It is named after Richard Burton, an English traveler who visited the area in that year.
