Burton, Michigan is a town in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing-East Lansing-Saginaw Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Burton were French traders and missionaries in 1795. The town was platted on September 11, 1818 by James Burtons, a fur trader with the Ottawa and Assiniboine tribes. The town was named after Captain John Burton of the British Royal Navy who had been killed at Veracruz Bay in Mexico during the War of 1812. Burton's death made it possible for his widow Deborah (née Randolph) to purchase land east of what is now Burton from her brother-in-law Wyandotte Indian chief Pontiac. On October 25, 1836, an act of Congress created citizenships for all residents of Michigan without exception; this act became law as the "Burton Act". On November 10, 1851, Burton became a station on the Grand Trunk Railway which initially ran through area but later connected with Detroit and other cities northwest of Lansing via switchbacks and tunnels. In 1861–62 there was a gold rush in central Michigan led by prospectors John Wesley Powell and Edward Salisbury which also affected Vista Township northeast of Burton; however most gold ore from this period remains undiscovered today because surface mining has become more common since then. In 1898 when Theodore Roosevelt visited Bartonville he noted that it looked like "a small village among big hills" due to its clustering of buildings around a courthouse square completed only two years earlier. By 1900 what remained of Bartonville had been absorbed into neighboring Clinton Township although some buildings still stand including court house (now used as office space), schoolhouse (now demolished), post office (now used as a garage), storerooms for local merchants and churches - all built between 1865 and 1901 when Clinton Township expanded northward into present day Hastings Township along Ionia Avenue). He also noted that several blocks south from where he stood contained abandoned mineshafts which would be newly mined each time sandbars formed on either side allowing ships access tonavigable waters off southern Ontario Peninsula while providing shelter from bad weather during severe storms or ice floes covering much northern Lake Erie/Bayfield County area during winter months
