In 1871–72 builders started construction on a canal linking Lake Huron to Superior via this same route they had just completed through Marquette Pass (); however due to severe weather conditions during winter months only about five miles (8 km) were built before being abandoned due to lack of money or interest from backers including lumber barons Isaac Singer and Augustus Kelley (). The first house built in what is now downtown Burton was probably erected about 1900 by Wm J Fenton Sr.; he sold water rights for pipes leading out his farmhouse across Otto Road () into downtown where he served as clerk for Gratiot Township government until his death in 1924 (). In 1907 Levi Strauss & Co., founded by Levi Strauss founder Abraham Weishaupt (), moved from their original home at 5th Avenue West () into what later became downtown Burton thanks to donations given by local merchants such as Julius Rosenwald (), Jens Lehmann (), Samuel Untermeyer (), Solomon Hirschman (), Reuben Levy () and Harry Sanger (); eventually more than 1,500 businesses were located downtown along Otto Road (). On October 11 million dollars worth of T-shaped lightbulbs were approved by voters within city limits who will be used throughout Downtown/Downtown Business Districts/Avenue North which encompasses much older neighborhoods like Greektown / Washington Heights etc., creating over 350 jobs right there right outside your front door!
