Burton was founded as a stage stop on July 4, 1836 by fur traders William Fenton and Isaac Nisbet along what is now Grand River Road west of present-day downtown Lansing. At first it consisted only of three buildings - a store, saloon, and post office - but soon grew into a town with a population totaling over 500 people by 1840. By 1851 it had become an important commercial center due to its position near major riverside crossings such as Lake Erie and Port Huron Bay (now Superior). In 1854 Burton became known as "The Hub Of The West Side", thanks to its importance as both an agricultural center for surrounding villages and a manufacturing node for items made in nearby Toledo, Ohio. However, during the Panic Of 1893 many businesses closed their doors including those in Burton; within six months most business owners had returned home or were relocated elsewhere within Michigan or Ohio due to low prices for foodstuffs brought over from abroad during that time period. However poverty continued to persist especially among women who worked outside the home raising children while menfolk drank alcohol or took other jobs available at that time; some families even resorted to selling their children into slavery in neighboring states during this difficult time period In 1898 Burton rejoined Michigan when it became part of the new United States following World War I; however rapid technological advancements had led many businesses closures throughout western Michigan during that decade so few residents remained comparatively unaffected despite lack of opportunity./ Despite these challenges local officials managed to keep up with changing times and help revive various industries such as retail trade before they finally fell victim to economic recession in 2001-2002 followed by declines thereafter until reaching 0% unemployment rate locality wide in 2009 following bankruptcy filing related thereto:/ During Prohibition era much social unrest occurred especially around illegal liquor sales although no arrests were ever made.; local officials cracked down on bootlegging beginning in 1919 although raids did not lead anywhere particularly significant given high demand for smuggled booze at that time../ After repeal both communities experienced relatively quick rebirth with new retail stores opening up quickly;; however progress stalled after 2000 when heroin addiction began becoming increasingly rampant among locals
