Burton, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 7,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Mt. Pleasant Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located about 20 miles east of Grand Rapids on US 131 and east of Ionia on M-864. Burton is named after George Washington Burton, an early settler in that area who donated land to the town in 1847. The first settler in what would become Burton was James Kincaid, who arrived in 1837 from Boston, MA. He erected a log cabin on what are now Main Street and Fourth Avenue and named it "Kincaid's Landing". In 1840, John Sibley founded Sibley & Company grocery store/ village post office at what is now Seventh Street and Third Avenue in Burton – which continues to be called Sibley's Landing today. In 1851, David Waddell settled down near present day First Street and Third Avenue in Burton with his wife Fannie (née Hales). They built a log cabin and began trading goods with other pioneer settlers northeast of their current location for cloth or other items needed for clothing during the early days of settlement in this area. By 1865, when Cadillac became a city Limits Settlement within Grand Rapids County, many new families had moved into the area due to its fertile farmland offered by the county Agricultural Road system between Lansing and Detroit – making it one of the most rapidly growing areas within that county during that time period! As Cadillac grew larger than any previous city limits settlement within that county by 1870 – including smaller settlements such as Brighton Heights (later Muskegon Heights), Albion (now Van Buren), Defiance Springs etc., all quite rural by comparison! – many residents began moving into Cadillac specifically because they could no longer find suitable farming or housing closer to their jobs back home! A group of men numbering at least 25 formed The Masonic Lodge No 2F on September 12th 1870 at Second National Bank building corner Sixth Avenue south side just west of present day First Street South! With membership continuing to grow throughout those years thanks largely to donations from individual members as well as occasional special meetings held at various locations within Cadillac like Masonic Hall or even churches like Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church!), The Lodge soon decided it would be best if they started doing some initial business activities outside their lodge room which became known as The Storefront! This allowed them more space inside their own building while also providing them with more opportunities for public meeting and education purposes too!!! Eventually becoming known simply as "The Masonic Lodge", this organization soon proved itself quite active & successful beyond just local Methuen Township!!
