Burton's history goes back to 1835 when it was founded as a small community on the east side of the Mackinac Bridge by Colonel John Burton and his family following their migration from Connecticut. In 1845, Burton became an incorporated town with a land base that extended into Upper Peninsula territory; today, much of what once constituted Burton's limits are within Macomb County. The first post office in Burton opened in 1836, and closed in 1841 because there were no mail carriers available to deliver mail to residents across the bridge into Mackinac County. The first store in town was established on Main Street in 1840 by General Alfred Stroudsley, who donated land for it on which to build his home. By 1850, Burton had two churches: one Presbyterian and one Methodist. The first school building was erected in 1861 and served until 1903 when it was replaced by a new one that still stands today on North Main Street near where Interstate 90 meets US-12 (the old route). In 1865, Burton annexed neighboring towns of Beecherville and Foley and formed its own municipality; this remained an option until 1907 when all municipalities within Washtenaw County were consolidated into Detroit under Mayor James Kieft's administration as part of efforts to improve transportation within Dearborn Heights/Detroit City Limits along I-75/I-96/US-24 (what is now Plymouth Township). In 1898, while serving as mayor of Detroit, Burton negotiated an agreement between United States Steel Corporation (USSC) subsidiary Toledo Blade Paper Co., Inc., then a small paper mill located just outside Flint Township boundaries southwest of downtown Detroit with majority ownership by Toledo Blade President Augustus Kelley Jr., for USSC to purchase control over all blade mills operating within Chrysler plants located outside Chicago due tosteel industry global recession at that time - including those operated by Associated Steelworks Company - subjecting them only to "appropriate tariffs" should they produce more than 10% less steel content than American production levels allowing further growth potential for domestic producers during World War I at lower cost effective rates for American consumers resulting from war production increases overall despite higher steel prices overseas not causing wartime production growth nationally although output increased statewide due memberships Pittsburgh Capacity Expansion Association having threatened industrial action over price Increase) resulting from expanding demand for automobiles after First World War; also increasing competition among automotive manufacturers which led Ford Motor Company president Henry Ford II to invest $1 million into Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company affiliate DuPont Trust Company shareholding in early 1925 merged with Philco Corporation forming Ford Motors Syndicate which eventually becameFord Motor Co.; prior thereto DuPont Trust had been majority owner also through Philco Corporation participation therein since 1924 together with Phelps Dodge interests owning about 27% common stock each owned outright or through affiliated partnerships including 7x General Electric Companies' NBC Television Network operations including 5x CBS Radio laugh track operations purchased from National Broadcasting Corporation via Purchase Agreement dated July 1926 relating consummation thereof being announced September 3rd 1927 via press release headlined "Philco Buys Out Associated Steelworks" - becoming sole sponsor responsible for programming features nationwide including 13x national news programs produced nationally daily throughout entire network during 1928 represented 50% owned thereby making him officially Publisher & President Emeritus third only thereto behind Hearst Magazine founder William Randolph Hearst & New York Times publisher Julius Hays associated therein - providing continued funding thru Service Contracts ($2 million per year thru 1936) annually plus interest PLUS fees representing 10% increase over original contract amount) NOTE: Original 1935 contract expiration date noted above therefore included herein as well as original fee amount below] In 1955 when municipal boundaries were changed following federalhood status changes for Washtenaw County as well as other boundary adjustments affecting nearby cities such as Novi [now Ann Arbor] and Saginaw [now Kalamazoo], portions adjacent thousand acres lying westward immediately southward thereof apportioned thenceforth unto Washtenaw Counties inclusive gotland under special provisions made thereunder relative thereto see map attached hereto annexed filed herewith said Gotland Map showing township lines connected therewith ---------------------- Accordingly notice has been given hereby specifying certain streets connecting said township lines so far northwesterly beyond said township line line running generally eastwesterly thence easterly parallel unto Ottawa Creek aforesaid kayaking will be allowed without going against any posted restrictions witheld hitherto

Burton is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 454 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing-East Lansing-Dearborn, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Burton was John Burton who arrived in 1795. He named his community after his brother Uriah (pronounced "yoo-ray"), an officer with the British army who had fought against the French and their Indian allies during the Seven Years' War. Uriah's village was located on what is now State Road 122 west of Burton. The village was incorporated as a city in 1834 and became a suburb of Lansing when that city was moved from Detroit to its present location within Muskegon County. In 1984, Burton merged with neighboring Dearborn to form one large urban area known as "Lansing-Dearborn." Burton has several historical landmarks which are worth noting include: The John Fenton House which dates back to 1824 and is home to the oldest operating cider press in America; The Masonic Temple built in 1897 and still useslectricity; and Old Western Hotel which opened in 1907 and is still used for business purposes today
Burton was founded in 1835 by Jacob Burton. The town was named for his father, John Burton. It grew rapidly during the early 1800s, and in 1833 it had a population of 350 people. In 1858, Burton became the first incorporated municipality in Michigan.
