The unincorporated community of Burton-Lansing is located in the town. The first settlement in what would become Burton was made on October 12, 1824 by John Sprague and his family when they crossed the MI Nicolet River from Ottawa County to get water for their farmstead near present-day Lansing. The Spragues called their new home "Nicolet" because they found a creek there that went by that name. In 1836, Burton became part of Washtenaw County when it was organized as such. Its first mayor was George Hennepin (1802–1868). In 1872, Burton's post office became the first in Michigan to be connected with an electric line when it opened between Lansing and Cadillac using horse power. In 1910, its public library opened underwritten by millionaire industrialist Alfred Prentice Cole (1861–1937). On November 3, 1912 Ulysses S. Grant died at age 73 after a long illness at General Hospital in New York City and is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery near Chicago in Section 571 due to his links to this area including being one of only two men ever elected President from Illinois without having been born there or living anywhere else during his time in office; he also served as US Commissionergeneralof Indian Affairs during much of this time period

On January 1, 1967 it became part of Washtenaw Township again due to merging with other nearby townships into one township boundary change order that became effective on January 1st (the date that Washtenaw Township boundaries were established).
