Burton, Michigan is a small community located in the Eastern Michigan University area of Michigan. The population was 9,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Portage County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Burton was John Burton who arrived in 1829. In 1837, Augustus Mullett established a post office here. The town was named for Burton and it became an initial stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War. In 1850, Abram Richardson opened a store in what is now downtown Burton. In 1863, Jigger Wessels built a sawmill and gristmill here. By 1870, there were six stores and seventy-six residences in town. In 1881, Edwin Sievers donated land to create what is now East High School (now DeVos Hall). This school served as Albion High School from 1906 until 1975 when it merged with Kalamazoo Valley Community College to form Eastern Michigan University's campus here. Today, Burton enjoys a vibrant commercial district with several high-end retailers including Macy's and Sears; as well as two large grocery stores - Smithfield Farms and IGA - as well as several local restaurants including Publix Super Markets and Joe's Pizza Place

Burton, Michigan was founded in 1834 by George Burton and his wife Rebecca. The town was named after General George Washington, who had died in 1799. The Burton family operated a mill and grocery store until the early 1800s. In 1827, Burton married Rebecca Ann Trimble and the two began to grow crops and build a home. They also started a school for their children. In 1837, Burton became an elected official for the region of Upper Peninsula. He served as supervisor of public works and justice of the peace. From 1840 to 1848, he served as mayor of Burton. In 1850, he ran for Congress but was unsuccessful. From 1851 to 1861, he served as state representative from Huron County. He did not run again until 1865 when he won election as a Democrat to the Twenty-Third Congresses (March 4th – March 3rd). From 1865 to 1870, Burton served as Governor of Michigan Territory (later state of Michigan). He supported pension programs for veterans and opposed Republican efforts to suppress labor unions. After leaving government service, he resumed farming and built a home near Grand Rapids in 1880–81. He died there on October 20th, 1888 at age 83 years old
