The first shots in Burton were fired on October 10, 1812 when Captain James Wilkinson of the USS Constitution shot an Indian paddle-nosed adelgid with a rifle from the ship's deck. The shot killed the creature and created a scare among the local Native Americans.
Burton is a small town in the Kalamazoo Valley of Michigan, United States. The population was 5,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. Burton is known for its Manufacturing industries and for its annual Burton Festival which features local arts and crafts exhibitions, food festivals, and a fireworks show. The first settler in what is now Burton was James Burtons grandson who landed on the present-day site on July 8th 1824. In 1829 James' son Samuel died leaving an estate valued at $2,500 with two slaves to manage it. Samuel's wife Esther (née Light) took over management of the estate until her death in 1840 when it was passed down to their son Johnathon Jr., then to his daughter Anna Maria (née Fay). After Johnathon's death in 1861 his widow Mary inherited it and continued running it as an Agricultural Estate until her death in 1886 when it passed to her nephew Harry Kinney who also ran it as an Agricultural Estate until 1902 when he sold it to Heman Witherspoon who operated it as a Steamboat Landing until 1916 when he leased it from the Lansing brothers who operated L&M Grain Elevators from 1926 until they bought them out in 1952. In 1916 Heman Witherspoon built the first municipally-owned water tower near Burton Village and began generating electricity from that source. In 1928 he donated land along State Street east of town for use as a public park; this became Burton Park after he died in 1968. After World War II, many manufacturing jobs moved out of Detroit because of competitive wage rates here while other companies closed down or relocated within Michigan or Ohio because of changing industry conditions. However, some new businesses were born out of these closures such as Joe's Pizza which opened up shop next door to L&M Grain Elevators in 1954; later that year demolition began on those buildings and Joes reopened inside those same structures with a new name - Joe's Pizza & Grains Incorporated - becoming one of the most successful local businesses ever founded in Michigan HP Pavilion followed suit two years later with their own store across State Street from L&M Grain Elevators; that store too eventually closed but HP continued operations through relocations into various buildings around town before finally closing its doors permanently all together on December 15th 2007 just days shy of their centenary anniversary

Burton, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 2,651 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Midland Township and within Washtenaw County's borders. The first European to visit Burton was surveyor George Ross in 1795 while exploring the area for a new route to Detroit through what is now Muskegon Heights and Grand Rapids areas. He named it for William Burton, an Englishman who had explored Huron River country in 1788-89 as part of James Kempton's exploration party from Detroit. In 1824, General John Green ran out of food near Tappan Lake and decided to head east instead using what is now Lansing as his headquarters. He ordered his troops to build a stockade around Tappan Lake so that no one could get out without permission and he started travelling downriver by boat until he reached Lansing on July 7th after spending two weeks upriver at Sault Ste Marie (now Traverse City). When news arrived back home of Green's retreat, Parliament authorized War Minister Canning to launch an invasion of American levels into Canada with overwhelming force against United States forces under Van Buren which ended up succeeding despite Commodore Perry warning them off; this event has been called "the Great Lakes Crisis". When Van Buren became president in 1829, he revoked Green's order and set about building himself a reputation as a constructive leader who would work towards peace rather than war with America's southern neighbour beyond just its borders. In 1830, Van Buren negotiated Treaty No 1 between the United States and Great Britain which ceded all present day Ontario northward along with much of Quebec including Toronto; these events have come to be known as "the North American Confederation." This treaty also created the Macdonald–Cartier Treaty granting British Columbia land east of the Fraser River before it eventually became part of Canada proper following confederation in 1867 when British Columbia seceded from Canada proper due to concerns over social injustice there (). In 1834, General Anthony Wayne led an army into Canadian territory during efforts to quell disturbances throughout Upper Canada associated with Starvation Row Rebellion; this event is commonly referred to as "the Invasion Of Canadia". During this time period Burton experienced increased growth due largely to its location being adjacent both Dearborn Creek - then known as North Bend - which served as a main trade corridor between Detroit/Muskegon Heights/Grand Rapids area and central Michigan via [Dearborn] Creek Bridge across that creek - then operated by ferry service - running southbound only between Grand Rapids & Dearborn Heights until 1938 when it was replaced by I-75 Alternate), making it one of only three cities along that routing still extant today (). Additionally, mills were built along Dearborn Creek starting around 1840s providing phosphate fertilizer for local farmers needed for their crops (); these mills are now known collectively as The Beltway Mills ( formerly Cadillac Mill) because they once housed five different types[…]of industries» . By 1860s many people had properties here including six families owning more than 50 acres (.50 square mile). However cotton farming continued well into 20th century according To Census enumerations taken in 1910 most residents engaged mainly in agricultural pursuits such as raising chickens or pigs(…).
