In 1837, John Senter opened a small store at what is now downtown Birmingham on Canfield Street between 4th Street South and 5th Street North—the first commercial establishment within what would become Downtown Birmingham Township (later part of downtown Macomb County). At that time, Canfield Street was all that separated the eastern half of town from the western half. In 1839 James Hardesty built a log cabin on Canfield Street just north of Senter's store; this became known as "Hardestyville." The first school in town was founded here by Andrew Jenson in 1841; it becameelementary school No. 2 for students in Walton Township (later part as Highland Park) when that township was organized July 1st, 1849. To commemorate Alabama's centennial year (1896), City Council voted to rename everything within our limits "Birmingham," including both townships – Wolverinesburg and Auburn Hills – but only after getting unanimous approval from each taxpayer! So we're still happy with our original name though some people might say it doesn't quite ring true today...lol! When World War II began many residents left their homes due to military service or war-related shortages such as food or gasoline rationing; however more arrived during reconstruction following Victory over Japan in 1945 than any preceding peacetime period During most of the 1960s Birmingham experienced growth primarily due to its position as an important center for aerospace production which benefited from new technology developments led by companies such as Rockwell Automation Ballistics Division headquarters located therefrom until 1992 when they relocated to Eaton MI

However, due to government intervention such as aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which provided money for reconstruction projects, business activity began to rebound by 1950. The city also experienced rapid growth during World War II with its involvement in the war effort. In 1945, Birmingham was designated as the capital of Alabama by then President Harry S Truman after it became clear that Mobile would not be accepted as Alabama's new capital due to its segregationist policies.
