In 1865, Birmingham, Michigan was the first city in the United States to be founded. One such attack occurred on December 4th of that year, when five men stormed into the home of contractor James Humes in broad daylight. Two of them immediately took aim at Mr. Humes' wife and two children before running off*; one shot Mrs. Humes dead while her young son lay helplessly wounded; three other men then rampaged through the house plundering everything they could find before fleeing back out onto Western Avenue**. ThisUnfortunately for Birmingham's attackers, one resident had already registered his alarm and alerted local police officers who arrived minutes after the attack began***. The perpetrators were quickly apprehended and charged with murder*; however, as luck would have it*, their victim's death never led to any arrests or prosecutions*. In 1859, due to growing industry in nearby Flint and by 1865 because of heavy demand for lumber from Indiana following the Civil War – primarily due to New Mexico's disputed annexation into Mexico – Battle Creek became one of four townships within Allegany County (the others being Ann Arbor (1849), Lansing (1850), and Mount Pleasant (1859)). On November 8 approve by voters within Allegany County general assembly creating what would become incorporated as City Of Birmingham with its own board Of Alderman & Mayor; Home Rule charter granted effective December 1st 1860 via act approved December 11th 1860 By The Legislature Of The State Of Michigan
