Birmingham, Michigan was laid out in 1837 by the original surveyors of the area. The town was named for Isaac Bryant, a judge and member of the Michigan General Assembly who represented what is now central and southern Wayne County. The first post office in Birmingham was established in 1839, and remained in operation until 1915. In 1847, the first cotton gin in the area was built, and production continued to increase until 1861 when a devastating fire destroyed most of downtown Birmingham. In 1865, construction began on the Oakland Railroad which transported goods from Detroit to points north. The city's growth continued during Reconstruction with new businesses being founded such as Sears & Roebuck, Ford Motor Company, First National Bank and Armoury Barracks. During World War II, Birmingham became one of the largest bombing sites in America with over 1 million tons of bombs dropped on it. After the war ended in 1945, many factories closed down but new ones were started up including Alcoa Aluminum Company and Chrysler Corporation.
