For three days McClellanPosts fought several pitched battles against Confederate forces occupying Mobile Bay before withdrawing without any results until November 11th when he finally sailed upriver towards Chattanooga unopposed having accomplished his strategic objective which was to break out Atlanta so Sherman could move southward into Georgia
