Big Rapids is located on the southern shore of Lake Huron and has been populated for over a thousand years. The first settler in what is now Big Rapids was John Purdy who arrived in 1795. He named his property after his friend and business associate, David Stroud, also from England. Purdy's land included present-day downtown Big Rapids as well as portions of what are now south side streets and alleyways. In 1836, George Stephenson built the first steamboat landing on the Rouge River atpresent-day Big Rapids to load coal from mines near Port Huron. The landing became an important commercial center during the early part of the 19th century because it offered easy access to shipping lanes between Detroit and other ports across the Great Lakes region. In 1875, James Caird developed a small community on land that he owned east of where current day Main Street crosses Rouge River. He named his community "Cairdville" after himself and his wife Margaret (née Caldwell). When railroads reached Big Rapids in 1887, Cairdville quickly became an important transportation hub providing service to nearby smaller towns such as Holland Township and East Lansing respectively.. During World War II, Big Rapids was home to many military personnel barracks including Fort Wayne Army Ammunition Plant which manufactured munitions for Allied forces fighting in Europe. The plant closed its doors following hostilities but left behind a significant impact on local economy with jobs being created throughout the area until those closures occurred some time later.
