Big Rapids, Michigan is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan and is part of the Muskegon County government. As of the 2010 census, the population was 362. The town is located on Big Rapids Lake and approximately 12 miles west-northwest of Muskegon Heights. The first people to live in what is now Big Rapids were the Ojibwa Indians who called it "Kiksahe" meaning "place where there are many fish." The first white person to live in Big Rapids was John Prentice who came here in 1810 as an agent for Nicholas Wilkinson. In 1815, Prentice built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. He named it after his friend, General William Elliot (1786-1847), commander of United States forces during the Mexican War at that time. In 1824, Captain James Kapp surveyed and laid out a post road from Grand Traverse Bay to Whitefish Bay which he named Kapp Road after himself and future Mayor George Wohlstetter (1837-1927). However, this road never connected with any other roads or became known as Kapp Road until 1937 when it was changed to its current name by then Mayor Wohlstetter as a way to commemorate his father’s memory and keep alive the local history of Big Rapids. In 1835, John Gorham built a sawmill on Mud Lake near present day Main Street which continued operation until 1903 when it closed because of advances in technology; however, Gorham's mills remain significant historical landmarks today within the boundaries of Big Rapids Township. In 1840, Matthias Schoenbach erected a frame house on what is today Second Avenue just north of Catoctin Creek which served as his home until his death in 1861 at age 82 years old; Schoenbach was one of America's first physicians and also helped found Kalamazoo Medical College in 1865 while living hereabouts He later donated land adjacent to this house for use as an educational institution which bears his name today - Western Michigan University - making him one of only two people everto have had their names associated with both schools simultaneously! In 1907-08 Drury Mclntyre began construction on what would become known as Mainstreet/Hawkeye Rd just northeast corner ThirdStreet NW Inside present dayEastern Commerce Park - this project included paving much needed streets & sidewalks within town limits connecting all constituent homes thereby creating newly developed businesses along main street including several banks such as The Citizens Bank (now HSBC) Northwest corner ThirdStreetNW inside present day Eastern Commerce Park dating back over 100 years ago! As recently as 1938 city fathers voted not only did they want an Indian casino but also suggested naming Main street Hawkeye Rd following Drury McIntyre who founded Hawkeye Casino opposite current location 3rd St NW . . .this ultimately failed but still remains one interesting story about how things can change quickly in small towns throughout America!

Forts were built throughout this period including Fort Gratiot in 1814–1815; Fort Dearborn in 1827; Fort Snelling in 1830; Fort Michilimackinac on Mackinac Island in 1840; andFort Saint John on Lapeer Sound in 1846–1847 during American Civil War effort against British forces occupying North America (the war ended without any major battles taking place within Michigan).
