In 1904, Wm Mears opened his grocery store at what is now West Side Market Street and it became one of the town's most popular businesses. Mears also donated land to make way for municipal hall which eventually became home to the current library building. Mears died in 1951 and his heirs donated part of their large estate to help fund local schools including Big Rapids High School which opened its doors on September 1, 1953 under then Town Clerk Vernon Agerstroms guidance as principal of nearby Gratiot High School until his retirement in 1984 when that school merged into Big Rapids Community Schools effective January 1st, 1985 This gifted gift gave birth to Gratiot Middle School across Second Street from Mears Grocery store where students would attend classes starting with 7th grade before moving on up through 12th grade along with Wednesday evening assemblies leading up t

Big Rapids was founded by the Potawatomi tribe in 1834. The city was named for Big Rapids, a tributary of the Kalamazoo River. The river served as the main water source for the city until 1942 when an underground water system was built.
