The Big Rapids holster company was founded in 1916 by John P. Wessels and George H. Heineman. The holster company produced a variety of handguns, including revolvers and shotguns, until the early 1920s. The company was purchased by the Tarrant Firearms Company in 1923. In 1928, the Tarrant Firearms Company merged with the Colt Corporation, and the Big Rapids holster company became Colt's Michigan Manufacturing Corporation. In 1940, the Big Rapids Armory was opened as a gunsmith shop and manufacturing plant for Colt pistols and revolvers under license from the Tarrant Firearms Company. From 1949 to 1970, Big Rapids Armory manufactured Browning Hi-Power handguns under license from Remington Arms Company. From 1970 to 1987, Big Rapids Armory manufactured Ruger American Legion revolvers and other firearms under license from Sturm Ruger & Co., Inc.. In 1987,Big Rapids Armory merged with Glock USA Inc.. Today, Glock produces handguns for both civilian and law enforcement customers throughout North America.
Big Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 20,831 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Grand Traverse County. It is located on the Big Rapids River, about 12 miles (19 km) west of Muskegon Heights and 8 miles (13 km) north-northwest of Marquette. The community was platted in 1871 by brothers Amos and Solomon Littlejohn as a farming village on the east side of Big Rapids River. The Littlejohns were among pioneers who helped found Marquette in 1837, one year after its incorporation as a town under Michigan’s new Constitution. They also founded what would become Big Rapids University in 1881, which remains an important educational institution today. Big Rapids was founded in 1835 by David Dodge. In 1892, Big Rapids became a city and it has been the seat of government for the city of Big Rapids since 1903.
