In 1987, Big Rapids, Michigan was the first municipality in the United States to adopt a municipal high capacity converter (HCC). In order to meet the needs of its growing population, Big Rapids erected its first HCC in 1987. Big Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and is the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 382 at the 2010 census, down from 498 at the 2000 census. In 1837, Big Rapids became a town charter with a population of 500 people. In 1849, it became one of nine townships within Washtenaw County when the county was created from parts of Wayne and Shiawassee counties. The city was first developed near Houghton Lake but quickly moved inland because there were no good sites for economic development on land that had never been used for farming or milling before. The city emerged as an important transportation hub due to its position on Houghton Lake and its ability to connect with other towns in Washtenaw County through roadways such as US-131 and M-1 Motorway (now I-94). The city also became known for its productionof paper products such as flour, paper towels, Kraft cheese, toilet cleaning supplies, printing presses and more. By 1960, Big Rapids had become one of Michigan's leading industrial cities with a major pulp manufacturing plant; a steel works; two light industries; four small businesses; eleven schools; three hospitals; six bars/pubs; five churches; four shopping malls; two airports serving Detroit and Grand Rapids areas; several thousand residents working in various industry sectors including defense contractor Bechtel AG until 2005 when they closed their operations in order to focus on new research facilities located outside Greater Lansingburgh Township limits while retaining some telephone service operational providing emergency services called "911" into those boundaries until 2007 when that service stopped altogether because funds ran out following bankruptcy reorganization plans announced by then Governor Rick Snyder resulting from increased competition within traditionalenterprise structures among private enterprise levels after national recession caused overall shrinkage in employment opportunities within state government structure)

Big Rapids is a town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 3,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing–Farmington Metropolitan Statistical Area.
