Big Rapids is a city in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 14,735 at the 2010 census. The city is the location of Big Rapids University and Big Rapids Township. The first European to visit what is now Big Rapids was French trader Pierre Le Moyne in 1795. He named it "Fond du Lac". In 1837, John Saginaw Company's General George Armstrong built a fort on the riverbank near where present-day downtown sits. This site served as the company's winter quarters until 1839 when they moved to Marquette Landing on theation downstream from Detroit. In 1847, Cadillac brothers James and John Dix bought land west of town and began construction of their sawmill on the confluence of the Rouge and Little River. They named their mill "Big Rapids" after their home country, Belgium (then part of France). It became one of Cadillac Brothers' most important businesses in this region. In 1870, local farmers decided to build a new school in town because there wasn't enough space for an existing school building or for another school to be built on top of an old furnace plant that had been abandoned for years. The cornerstone for the new school was laid by President Ulysses S. Grant on October 3, 1870 at a dedication ceremony that included speeches by then-Governor Babcock and Mayor McKay (now part of Hollandale). This new school cost $30,000 ($ as of 2019) which also financed a brick courthouse and other buildings used by Big Rapids schools up until World War II when those buildings were torn down to make way for military housing barracks etc.. When World War II ended many people left town but some stayed close to work at various factories while others founded small villages near big rapids like Hollandale while others still live here today including my grandmother who lives just east from downtown on Main Street with her grandchildren Callie & Cody

The first settler in Big Rapids was John Bigelow, who moved from Massachusetts in 1837 and built a cabin on what is now West Main Street. The town grew slowly for many years because there were no commercial opportunities other than fishing and farming. However, when construction began on the Grand Trunk Railway through Coates County in 1865, development accelerated due to the potential for passenger traffic. By 1870, there were enough businesses established to create a village and name it Big Rapids. That year also saw the first school opened in Big Rapids – a log building called Green House which served as both kindergarten and grade school until 1975 when an addition was constructed that included a science wing and gymnasium. This building still stands today as part of the Municipal Building complex located on Main Street near the riverfront park where the town square once stood (now home to several restaurants). In 1967, after years of planning and discussion among local leaders, Big Rapids became an official city with its own police department and fire department as well as its own streetscapes and infrastructure! At that time, it had just over 1,000 residents; however, since then it has experienced significant growth rate with current population reaching over 7600! A number of notable events have taken place within our walls including: -The first victory parade across Lake Huron by members of the US military during World War II -The opening of Detroit’s new downtown area which included much office space and housing for high-ranking government officials including Mayor George Romney -The creation of Macomb County which includes portions of present day Coates County includingBig Rapids
