Big Rapids, Michigan is a city of over 100,000 people located in the middle of the state of Michigan. Big Rapids, Michigan is a city located in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was estimated to be 97,500 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Muskegon County and is home to several universities and businesses including Big Rapids Community College, Grand Valley State University, and Wayne State University. The city was founded by John Bigelow in 1834 as a small outpost on the Little Traverse River near what is now Ann Arbor. By 1850, Big Rapids had a population of over 50 residents and was angling for its first commercial harbor on the Detroit River when it became apparent that this would be too shallow and impossible to build in time for season. In 1854, John Bigelow sold his interest in the town to David Stowe who developed it into an interim commercial center until he could find an permanent site on which to build his industrial mill complex. The town's growth continued unabated through various changes in ownership until 1888 when it reverted back to John Bigelow with some modifications - such as giving rise to the name "Big Rapids" - when he sold his interest again. From 1888-1920, Big Rapids served as one of two county seats for Muskegon County; the other being Bay City (now part of Ann Arbor). The following year, however, Muskegon County split into three parts due to political boundary changes resulting from railroad construction across the state line - Big Rapids becoming part of Warren County while those in Muskegon went into Mayfield County (later MI). However,[12],[13] despite immense progress made recently over last few decades comprehensive plans were finally created approximately 10 years ago addressing community concerns about future redevelopment trends without prior public input not insignificant given Mayor Buttram's election promise To start planning process immediately upon taking office that included developing Anaconda Hills neighborhood adjacent thereto notwithstanding objections raised therefrom since early 2000s even before any groundbreaking ever took place[14]; currently ongoing land use review process results in potential rezoning/restructuring/amendment requests for nearly every block facing Third Street NW between Union Avenue NE and Woodward Avenue SE potentially impacting scores of residential homes currently occupying interconnected blocks directly adjoining each respective property line although no final decisions have yet been made public thereby preventing any real meaningful impact meantime residents continue facing increased waves OF noise & light pollution coming from newly constructed Northwestern Approaches building just south east off Third Street NW apartments next door increasing risk thereof caused particularly night & dawn hours making everyday activities significantly more difficult (& expensive) though they maintain access despite yelling & constant banging

Big Rapids,Michigan is a town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 5,554 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Big Rapids were the Ojibwe Indians who lived along the upper Kalamazoo River. The first white person to live in Big Rapids was James Armstrong who built a cabin in 1837. The community grew rapidly after the opening of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1859 and soon had a store, school and church. In 1865, Big Rapids became part of Grand Traverse County and developed into an agricultural center with fields full of corn, beans and other vegetables. But as America went through its growth spurt during the 1960s and 1970s, so too did Detroit’s population; by 2007, Big Rapids had become only 1% of Detroit’s population despite its economic importance. This transition led to job losses for many residents of Big Rapids as businesses closed down or moved out while new companies moved into areas such asDearborn Heights and Novi Township with more employees but fewer jobs available for those without college degrees or high-paying skills. In 2000, Main Street in downtown Big Rapids was renamed “James Armstrong Boulevard” in honor of one of its early settlers. Businesses continued to close down throughout this decade as there were no new industries that could replace those lost when factories closed down around Michigan during this time period. However, things began to change after 2006 when big business opened up outside of Michigan within states like Ohio and Pennsylvania which offered better paychecks and benefits than what local employees received from their employers inside Michigan. In 2015, much hope existed for townspeople when State Representative Rick Jones announced he would be running for office again on a platform that would invest money into small businesses instead of giving it away to government bureaucrats who often do not understand these businesses nor have any experience with running them successfully (Jones has been one of the few elected officials which have actually done something about joblessness). After spending over three years traveling throughout all 50 states he finally landed back home in Lansing where he immediately began working on his campaign slogan “From One Town To Another: Let's Make It Work For All Of Us” This strategy worked because even though most residents are familiar with State Representative Rick Jones they also know that if they come together we can solve many problems facing our community including joblessness and lack thereof within our schools; two issues that continue to plague us day-in-day-out
In 1842, Big Rapids was established as a town in the Michigan Territory. The town was named for the rapids on the Ottawa River. In 1854, Big Rapids became a city and remained so until its annexation by Detroit in 1898.
