The history of firearms in Big Rapids, Michigan dates back to the 1820s. At that time, the area was part of the land grant to John S. Goode from Ottawa County. Goode named his new township, Big Rapids, in honor of President James K. Polk and General Zachary Taylor. He also donated a number of cannons to the town's armory, which was established in 1827. The townspeople continued to use these cannons for defense until 1830 when they were transferred to the United States arsenal at Ann Arbor for use against Indian hostilities. During World War II, Big Rapids became home to several military installations including Fort Snelling and Camp Hubbard on Hwy 20 near downtown. These facilities were used for storage and test firing of artillery and other weapons during the war.

Pistol regulation began being implemented by various governments at this time which led to increased handgun sales throughout the world due to newfound security concerns about potential threats such as terrorism and crime motivated by pent up anger and frustration with ineffective government policies

Today, Big Rapids is one of Michigan's most vibrant communities – home to some of the best shopping in all of the state as well as lively nightlife options such as casinos and beer gardens – making it one of America's favorite tourist destinations for retirees or first-time visitors alike.
On July 17, 1847, the first steamboat to navigate the Big Rapids River was launched. The boat was called the Niagara and it towed a group of people and goods over the rapids.
