Big Rapids, Michigan is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan that has a population of just over 10,000 people. The city is located on the Middle Peninsula of Mackinac Island and is bordered to the north by Port Huron, to the east by Grand Rapids, to the south by Saginaw and Bay City, and to the west by Bracebridge. The first permanent settler in Big Rapids was Jonas Nolde who arrived in 1788. Nolde owned land around what is now Big Rapids and built a cabin there. In 1824, John Jenssen settled in Big Rapids and began to build a mill outside the town limits. By 1834, Jenssen had built two other mills in Big Rapids – one for cotton goods and another for flour. By 1850, all three mills were consolidated into one under the name of John Nolde & Son Mills Company. The company manufactured goods from flour through cotton until 1906 when it became part of Armour Industries Incorporated (AI). During World War II, Big Rapids was occupied by troops from both Canada and America as part of The Battle of The Bulge which took place between December 16- January 7th 1945 nearby Kalkaska Naval Air Station on Mackinac Island. In 1951-1952 Anheuser Busch Brewery bought control of Armour Industries Incorporated which led to big reductions at AI including eliminated jobs at its Flint manufacturing plant where employees staged a walkout on November 12th 1951 followed two weeks later with an open letter published in "The Detroit News" decrying Avery Brewing Co.'s control over AI which they saw as subversive because it threatened their monopoly onDetroit's "Imperial IPA". On October 9th 1952 management announced that brewing operations would be moved from Flint to Anheuser Busch Brewery's new main brewery building located near downtown Dearborn Heights (a suburb) rather than continue operations at ABI's old Flint facility where production costs were outstripping profits; this change also affected AI's brands such as Anchor Steam (now Heineken), Blue Moon (now Budweiser), Old Milwaukee (now Schlitz), All American Beer (then Samuel Adams), etc.. With these changes came increased competition from local breweries within Anheuser Busch Brewery itself as well as others looking to enterthe beer market during this period such as Canadian Pacific Railway brewer Canadian National Railway Co., Miller Brewing Co., etc.. In 1986 AI merged with SABMiller plc forming British American Tobacco plc which continued operations under several names until 2000 when BAT completed its acquisition of Philip Morris International plc - meaning that Philip Morris International ceased all tobacco business except cigarette sales across all divisions including cigarettes marketing and research& development activities(which are now part) within BAT’s global smokeless tobacco division - making Big Rapids becoming one of only two cities worldwide without any existing tobacco businesses! Big Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kent County. The population was 37,872 as of the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1824 by members of the Big Rapids Methodist Church and is located on the Grand River between Detroit and Saginaw. It became a city in 1901 after it was annexed by Detroit. The first settlers in what is now Big Rapids were Methodists who came from Ohio in 1824 to start a church there. They named their settlement Big Rapids because they thought that it would be larger than any other town on the river bank. The first permanent settler was John Potter, who arrived in 1827. He built a log cabin on his property which he named "Potter's Landing." By 1830, Potters Landing had become an important trading post on the riverbank because it had been granted land by then-Governor Purdy for this purpose. In 1834, Potters Landing was renamed "Big Rapids" after its founder, John Potter Sr., because of its size and importance at that time as a port for goods coming downriver from Canada and points east (including Detroit). When Detroit became a city in 1901, Big Rapids lost its status as an incorporated municipality but continued to function as an unincorporated community within Wayne County until 1955 when it joined with neighboring Ruthville to form the new City of Dearborn Heights (now part of Midland). The heyday of Big Rapids' economic creativity occurred during World War II when hundreds of local men worked at General Motors plants near Flint or elsewhere across Michigan producing munitions needed for Europe. Many residents also engaged in commercial fishing and lumbering operations along the Grand River which formed one side of what is now Perry Road downtown; while other portions housed government buildings such as fire stations and jails while much residential housing still remains today including many rowdy bars popular among dancehall dancers called "the dives". In recent years much development has taken place around downtown including several high-rise condos/hotels/marketplaces along Perry Road just south of I-75 exit 191A known locally simply as "The 66". One unintended outcome has been increased traffic congestion around downtown due to all these new developments although overall crime rates have declined over time
The town of Big Rapids, Michigan was founded in 1836 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother James. The town rapidly grew and by 1840 it had a population of 2,500 people. The first school in the town was opened in 1837. In 1839, Big Rapids became the capital of Michigan.
