Big Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 97,675 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in Michigan after Detroit. The city is located on a bend in the Muskegon River and is home to several important facilities for education and industry. The first settlement in what would become Big Rapids was made by French fur traders operating out of Sault Ste Marie, Upper Canada in 1795. In 1814, Big Rapids became part of organized United States territory following the Louisiana Purchase from France. It was incorporated as a town on December 13, 1824. It gained its current name during the Civil War when General John Custer's force were trying to cross the river and attack Fort Dearborn on July 10, 1863; becauseappropriate names for Indian towns had not yet been decided upon by US officials at that time, Big Rapids became "Big Rapids" as an attempt to identify with other nearby communities that had also borne this name since before war times. During World War II (1946-1947), Big Rapids played an important role as one of two plants run by DuPont Company’s Cannery Division – located about six miles downstream from where present-day downtown exists – for producing munitions used during World War II and later post-war years. The plant produced plutonium products which were used to make nuclear weapons until 1974 when they were decommissioned due to their destructive effects on environment and human health; however remnants can still be seen today around downtown area near North Main Street According to Forbes magazine's 2003 list of "America's Unforgettable Small Cities", Big Rapids has been ranked No. 7 among America's “Top 20 places for small businesses” over the past ten years based on total economic output (adjusted for inflation). Big Rapids was founded on October 30, 1837 by German immigrants as Big Rapids Township, part of what is now Oakland County. In 1868, Big Rapids became a city with its own government and charter. It annexed portions of nearby Muskegon Heights in 1907. The modern-day town center was built between 1915 and 1925 by expanding small businesses into new buildings on the site of an old millrace south of downtown. The first commercial building in downtown Big Rapids was the Pigeon Forge Brewery which opened in 1914. The Great Northern Railway served as the main transportation artery for much of downtown until 1978 when it was replaced by US 131A (now I-75). Downtown's namesake store is Jenson's Jewelry which opened in 1916 as one of only two jewelry stores west of Chicago before that time. Jenson's closed in 1979 but reopened under new ownership after being vacated for several years during redevelopment efforts around Downtown Detroit on Woodward Avenue adjacent to Comerica Park Detroit; it remains open today as a museum store insideComerica Park Detroit In addition to its corporate headquarters located across I-75 from downtown, other major employers include Wayne State University (the second largest university campus eastof Chicago), Royal Dutch Shell plc., DeVos Childrens Hospital, Mater Dei High School District 2Erden Intermediate School District 2A - also known locally as "Mama MIA" - and Saginaw Valley State University East Lansing campus; all located within 1 mile (1 km) or less radius central to Downtown Big Rapids
