In May 2017 an unarmed suspect was shot dead by Seattle police after refusing orders not to comply with arrest; this case also sparked protests throughout Seattle (Hanson). These events have raised awareness about both the dangers associated with using tasers as well as concerns about their potential misuse by police officers.

Berkley is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 20,083 at the 2010 census. Berkley is one of four townships in Oakland County and is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. It lies on the east bank of River Rouge, about 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of downtown Detroit. Michigan's first post office called Berkley Township was established on December 12, 1824, by James Lenthall with a letter from George Washington as its first mail carrier. In 1826, it became a village under the name "Bellevue". In 1836, it changed to "Berkley", after Colonel John Berkley who had donated land for the village center on which it now stands. The township's original courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1861 and replaced by a new building that still stands today; it served as both court house and government center until 1924 when it burned down again. The township seal features an apple tree surrounded by grain ears; this symbolizes agriculture since Apple trees are common in nearby orchards during warm weather months. In 1868, rural sections were organized into two villages: Bellevue and Elmira (later Grosse Pointe Farms). In 1872, Bellevue merged with Berkley to form what is now known as Bellevue Township again; Elmira did not merge with Berkley but continued to be part of Grosse Pointe Farms until 1984 when they also merged into Oakland County. A local legend has it that General James Kapp found buried treasure near Berkley while making his way through Oakland County during World War II; he immediately ordered all houses within two miles (3 km) to be abandoned so no one would find him unprepared should hostilities break out again! However this story may have been just folklore based on stories told around campfires throughout history! In 1918, during World War I,[1] two American soldiers were killed while serving as guards at a munitions plant on Belle Isle on Detroit's east side; this led to protests against war production by many citizens[2] and eventually led to passage of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1919 which established Fort Dearborn as an American military post outside ofDetroit.[3][4] In 1924,[5] due to rapid growth within Belle Isle's boundaries,[6] City Hall was moved from its original location on Woodward Avenue between Gratiot and Cass avenues to what is now Second Street near Centerfield Road. The old City Hall building still stands today and serves as headquarters for both Metro Detroit United Way[7][8][9][10] and Park District #1 (formerly known as North Eastern High School).[11][12][13]
