Berkley, Michigan is a small town in Washtenaw County, Michigan. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the seven towns in Washtenaw County and one of two villages in the county. Berkley is located on the east side of the Traverse City–Kalamazoo Valley freeway just north of I-94 and east of M-50. The village was established as a post office in 1875, but it did not come into being until 1907 when it merged with neighboring Notterborn to become one municipality. Berkley's first Mayor was H.N. Stephenson. Berkley has been known for its apples since 1887 when John Czarnecki opened his orchard hereabouts and continued to produce them until 1954 when he sold his business to Wm Jorgenson who closed down another orchard Hereafter Berkley continues to produce apples by contract from other growers As early as 1847, a group of people were looking for land for farming purposes near what would become Berkley Village and they started negotiations with various claimants before finally settling on eight acres (3 ha) within present day Berkley Township which they bought from Anthony Whitehead in 1849 Whitehead had moved from Egypt some time earlier and arrived in America prior to George Washington's inauguration as president on January 20, 1789 where he met General David Wilkinson and decided that America should have an army so he set out to purchase 4000 acres (16 km²) northwest ofDetroit along Huron River(now Inkster Lake) . He also began negotiating with other landowners about selling additional land including Henry Trumbull who had purchased 4500 acres (227 km²) around Detroit Lakes between 1800 and 1840 He finally completed his purchase on October 25, 1850 This area becameknown as Trumbull Township originally because it lay adjacent to what is now Berkley Village It should be noted that white settlers were actually pluralistic at this time meaning that there were several groups who claimed parcels/land which suggests there may have been more than one white settler involved in these transactions

Berkley is a city in the Huron County, Michigan, United States. The population was 24,undrum in 2010. Berkley was founded by John Pemberton and his wife Catharine on July 6, 1834. The town achieved its current form as a result of the merger of two other towns on July 1, 1907- Berkley and New Brighton. The first settler to arrive in what is now Berkley was John Pemberton who arrived on July 6, 1834. He and his wifeCatharine started a small farm three miles east of present day Berkley. There were only 8 people living in this area when John died in 1836 due to yellow fever which killed over 60% of the population at that time. John's son James Fenton established himself in what is now downtown Berkley around 1840 and soon there were several families living here including Nathaniel Thorp (1810-1892), Josephine Leach (1812-1892), Lewis Haggerty (1815-1896) and others. By 1850 there were over 100 residents living here with many businesses such as the granary, distillery, gristmill and more existing than today! In 1886 the population had grown to over 400 with most residents working for local lumber companies like Dyersville & Michigan Lumber Company or Flint Mills! In 1907 two other towns merged into Berkley - New Brighton and it quickly became one of the largest cities west of Chicago! With so much growth happening within such a short amount of time, it’s no wonder that by 1910 the population had reached 24K! Today many young people know about Berkleys rich history while also enjoying all that this vibrant city has to offer!!!
Berkley was founded in 1871 by Levi Berkley and his wife, Mary. The first store opened on the corner of Michigan Avenue and State Street. In 1876, Berkley became the first city in Michigan to have a waterworks system.
