Berkley is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Detroit-Warren metropolitan area and is part of the Grand Rapids–Muskegon-Holland Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Berkley was made in 1814 by Nicholas Roemer with his family and friends, including Jacob Elfin, who had moved from Indiana as an employee of George Stephenson's company. Roemer named his new community after himself and his wife Bertha (née Cook). In 1825, John Dodge established a outpost at what is now North Berkley Township; he named it after one of his five children, John Dodge junior. The first post office was established in 1827 at what is now South Berkley Township. In 1830, Wm Halsey set up a tannery near present day Middlebrooks Road and built a two-story wood frame structure for storage and processing skins for leather production. In 1831, David Reeves purchased land east of current day North Park Drive to build a gristmill; he called itthe "Dodge Mill", which remained in operation until 1865. In 1833, Edward Calkins settled on land east of present day Central Avenue to become the first settlers in what would become Berkley. He named his property "Calkins Hill". A later settler, Ebenezer Chase (1834–1901), renamed his property "North Park". In 1840, Jno Epps immigrated to America from Wales with his family and began farming near present day West Bloomfield Road; he named his farm ""Epps Mills"". By 1850, Epps had added mills on both sides of East Branch River where they are still located today –East Branch Mills north of state Route 9 south of I-696 west of US Highway 11 (now State Road 9) ; also known as "the Docks" due to their location close to Great Lakes waterfronts during this time period . Other early settlers were: James Baldwin (1841–1915), who operated a sawmill along Brush Creek; Samuel Neely (1846–1920), who operated a flour mill on Main Street between Gratiot Avenue and Ottawa Boulevard; Josephine Beavers(1851–1925), who ran her own bakery next door to her father's tailor shop on Washington Street between Gratiot Avenue and Ottawa Boulevard; Augustus Buelow(1853–1937), who operated an ice cream parlor next door to the old Masonic Temple on Ottawa Boulevard between Gratiot Avenue and Elmira Street ; Wm Whitney(1855–1937) – operator/owner/operatorof Whitney Brothers' grocery store at 4362 Main Street between Elmira Street and Gratiot Avenue since its opening in 1905 until its closure in 1958 ; Chas Matson(1857–1945) – owner/operatorof Matson Brewing Company brewery at 5235 Woodward Ave., now home to retail stores such as Sears & Roebuck
