Berkley is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 18,822 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in the county after Ann Arbor. Berkley is home to Eastern Michigan University and several major shopping centers. The first Europeans to visit what is now Berkley were French missionaries, who landed on the shore of Mackinac Island in 1796 and named it for Jean Baptiste Berkely, one of their number. The area that includes Berkley today was first settled by Native Americans, who called it "The Headwaters." In 1812, General Harrison's army invaded Michigamie Territory and burned most of the villages along the upper Mackinac River before marching through what is now Berkley on their way back to Detroit. This event helped start over 50 years of settlement in this area by European settlers. In 1825, a group of farmers founded the town of Harperstown (now part of Rochester), on land which they had purchased from the Indians. The town grew rapidly due to its location near open water resources and its easy access to transportation via steamboats and canals. By 1830, Harperstown had a population of over 100 residents and became an important shipping center for goods brought downriver from Detroit or upriver from Valley City (now Lansing). In 1837, John Denny founded Denny's Land Company with help from Nathan Bedford Forrest and other investors seeking to develop lands west of Detroit as cotton plantations. The company acquired 209 acres (76 hectares) east of present-day Berkley on the banks of the Red Cedar River from Ishmael Reed & Co., developers who had earlier bought 400 acres (160 hectares) northeast of Harperstown for $1 per acre ($23 per hectare). After selling his interest in Denny's Land Company in 1840 to Abraham Lincoln for $10 million dollars ($2 million present-day value), Forrest began developing what are now parts of Farmington Hills and Dearborn Heights into large plantations that would produce cotton until well into World War II. Fifty miles (80 kilometers) south southwestward lies Ann Arbor Township which was organized as part of Huron County on November 1st, 1850 following territorial government restructuring under President James Kapp’s new Organic Act which created western Michigan as a separate territory under Republican rule following statehood within Michigan; thus Ann Arbor Township included all but southeastern portions currently contained within Washtenaw County including much later parts adjacent to Metro Wayne County - thereby providing an unbroken chain extending across three counties line: NW corner Huron St., SW corner White Oak Rd., SE corner Beltline Rd.). Berkley and two others as a post office on the west side of what is now Birchmount Road. The town grew rapidly during the early 19th century with many new homes being built along Birchmount Road and other streets leading to it. In 1847, Berkley became a village when all of nearby Harper Woods became part of the town. In 1860, when Mennonite settlers from Canada moved into central Michigan, they found land for their community near where Berkley now stands on Birchmount Road. The city's first school opened in 1868 and was known as Central School until it merged with Harper Woods in 1872. After that time, Central School operated as both schools until it closed in 1903 because of financial difficulties. In 1907, the city bought what is now Parkwood Drive from its previous owner for $2,500 and renamed it Parkwood Drive Elementary School after its new owner's daughter). That same year also saw the opening of Elmhurst High School which served students across the street from Central School until 1978 when it merged into Wayne State University's main high school campus - Elmhurst did not become an elementary or middle school again until 1992 (when Southfield Middle School opened).
