In 1824, George Stephenson founded a logging village on the south side of Huron Lake near present-day Berkley Township. When trade improved with Detroit and nearby villages, many settlers came to live in Berkley and other settlements along Huron River valley between Detroit and Ann Arbor from 1825 to 1829. In 1830, Isaac Brockman established a mill at Nekoosa Creek (now Big Rapids Road), which soon became one of the most important factors driving growth for businesses and families in central Muskegon County during that period. By 1840, over 2,000 people lived within five miles of downtown Muskegon Falls; by 1850 this had shrunk to 350 residents living within 10 miles of downtown Muskegon Falls only; by 1860 this had decreased to 100 residents living within 5 miles of downtown Muskegon Falls only. The city annexed much of east Muskegon County (including present-day Kent) in 1875 as part of its effort to build an urban area large enough to serve as its cultural center while avoiding annexation by Ann Arbor which it saw as encroaching too heavily upon its own commercial interests Berkley's growth slowed after World War II when more jobs were available outside Michigan but also when suburban development started moving into central Muskegon County for similar reasons. However, recent redevelopment has brought new life back into downtown areas around Nekoosa Creek Regional Park and Little Traverse Bayou/Neenah Creek park located east of town off State Route 906

Berkley, Michigan is a small town in the administrative area of Saginaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saginaw-Bay City-Hillsboro metropolitan area. The first settlement in Berkley was a logging camp established by John Prentice in 1855. A post office called Berkley was established in 1858, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1871, the community purchased land from David Levy to form what would become Berkley Township. The township was renamed after Samuel Hinton Berkley (1811-1884), an early settler and delegate to the Michigan State Senate who served as its first president from 1889 to 1893 and 1895 to 1897. In 1900, a school district was organized within Berkley Township and named after Mrs. Gertrude Chandler (1868-1939), an employee of the Detroit Edison Company who donated land for a new high school building and other educational purposes near her home on Elmwood Drive. The first high school classes were held at this facility on September 15, 1901. In 1912, another school District organization occurred when Ridgefield Township merged into Berkley Township; that district's name remains unchanged today despite changing boundaries several times throughout its history.
Berkley was founded in 1837 by George Berkley, a cooper entrepreneur. In 1851, the town became the seat of Oakland County. In 1875, it became part of Michigan and in 1925 was named after Alice Paul.
