In 1876, a group of men from Benton Harbor, Michigan started a company that would become the world’s first weapon flashlight company. The men were led by attorney and business man George Nicolay and engineer Willis Hixon. Nicolay was interested in creating an efficient light source for law enforcement officers, and he began looking for a new way to make his devices more reliable. He found that existing hand-held lanterns had inadequate light penetration, so he developed a design that featured a small lens on one end and an LED light bulb on the other. This system allowed the user to control the amount of light given out by their device by moving the lens. The Nicolays soon realized that they could create high-quality lights at low cost, which they did with their original product, the Comet flashlight. The Comet flashlight became very popular among police officers throughout North America during its early years. It was easy to use and produced excellent light quality, making it ideal for night operations. However, due to its limited production run and relatively low price point, the Comet flashlight never reached as wide an audience as some of its competitors such as Beamlight or Alienware products. Benton Harbor is a small town located in the heart of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The town was founded on the banks of the Huron River in 1824 by Captain James K. Benton and his family as a fur-trading post. The name "Benton Harbor" was chosen because it had an alternate spelling, "Bentonville." The first settler in what is now Benton Harbor was Levi Coffin, who arrived in 1827. By 1830, there were over 100 people living in Benton Harbor. It wasn't until1836 that the first school was built in Benton Harbor. In 1843, a mill was built on the river to process lumber from nearby trees. The mill became known as the "First Mill". After World War II, energy exploration began to take hold in Michigan and this led to the construction of numerous factories throughout Benton Harbor. One such factory was Smith Machine Works which became one of North America's leading manufacturers of industrial machines during the 1950s and 1960s. Today, part of Smith Machine Works still stands within view of downtown Bendon Harbor and is open for tours every day from 9am to 5pm PDT!
