The city's success led to growth and development throughout the 1840s and 1850s, with new industries such as cheese production becoming popular after being introduced from Canada. During this time period, Bendon Harbor also became known for its annual "Fishing Festival." This event featured local fishing tournaments that were open to all residents regardless of social or economic status; it was one of the most important events in town life during this time period. In 1859, Bendon Harbor celebrated its 500th anniversary with an official celebration attended by dignitaries from across North America including President James Buchanan and Prime Minister John Acheson The late 19th century saw renewed development around Bendon Harbor due largely to transportation improvements made along both Interstate 95 (now I-75) and Michigan State Highway 21 (now M-1). These projects helped spur residential construction along I-95 southward from Toledo towards Flint while also creating new jobs northward in Lansing and Auburn Hills. In addition, Bendon Harbor enjoyed popularity among boaters due to its many lakeside attractions which included several miles of shoreline extending into Mackinac Island National Lakeshore
