Benton Harbor is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, situated on the shores of Lake Huron. The population was 9,853 at the 2010 census. Benton Harbor is one of two communities in Washtenaw County, Michigan (the other being Muskegon Heights) that are both incorporated municipalities with their own police and fire departments; the other community is Southfield. Benton Harbor was first settled in 1836 by James Fenton and his family as a summer home for himself and his wife's parents. By 1840, Benton Harbor had a store, post office, schoolhouse and three homes - all built before 1840. The discovery led to an increase in production by local entrepreneurs and also stimulated new industry such as lumberjacking which began operations soon afterward. Benton Harbor is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Huron River. The population was 10,792 at the 2010 census. Benton Harbor was founded in 1837 by Samuel Benton and his wife Martha Ann Wright as a post office and trading center on the east bank of the Huron River. The name may be derived from "bent" (a woody shrub) and "harbor" (a port). The first settler in Benton Harbor was Samuel Benton Sr., who arrived in 1837 with his family from Virginia. He built a log cabin on what is now State Street, which became the town's first home. By 1840, other families had also moved into Benton Harbour, including John Ladd and Elijah Morse Jr.. In 1841, Isaac Smeaton purchased land west of present-day State Street for $10 per acre(s). This area became known as Smeaton Heights. In 1847, David FentonPurchase land east of present-day State Street for $15 per acre(s). This area became known as Fenton Heights. In 1850, about 100 people lived in Benton Harbor; by 1860 it had grown to 300 residents. That year, an act passed by the Michigan Legislature authorized construction of a canal through central Michigan that would connect Lake Superior with the Mississippi River basin via the Washtenaw Channel. The new city of Detroit was founded nearby and soon attracted many teachers and their families who wanted to move closer to jobs in downtown Detroit or downriver at its newly developed dockside neighborhoods such as Canfield or Warren Park. By 1870–71, 400 people lived in Benton Harbor; it had become one of Detroit's most prosperous communities! However, during this time period there were also several major tragedies that struck this community: On October 15th & 16th 1861 seven members of City Council – six men and one woman - were killed when their wagon train overturned near present-day Joe Louis Arena after crossing over the open prairie onto another common property parcel; two years later three women died when they were swept away along with their children while playing outside on Grosse Pointe peninsula; on November 15th 1901 an express train derailed just south of town centre killing all 33 passengers onboard In 1862–64 there was further violence when Confederate sympathizers burned down government buildings throughout what is now downtown Detroit including Fort Dearborn Arsenal where military supplies were stored On July 1st 1865 Henry Ford made his famous speech before Congress denouncing slavery & calling for it to be abolished through legislation he introduced called The Fourteenth Amendment which read: "No person … shall be held captive or sold within any territory dedicated to public education." As part of achieving this goal he then donated all surplus slave holdings belonging to various American companies back into African American hands rendering them free forever! During these dark times businesses owners like Wm Henson started up businesses unrelated to agriculture such as tanning skinners etc.; steel production increased due to Union demand for munitions during World War I but quickly declined after America entered war with Europe; however some old warehouses still stand vacant today used mostly for agricultural storage tenant farmers currently using them for training purposes related mainly To animal husbandry
