Benton Harbor, Michigan is a city in Lapeer County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Lapeer County. Benton Harbor is part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Benton Harbor were two brothers who were farmers and traders named John and Nicholas Benton. The town was founded on February 3, 1836 by Elijah Green and Alfred Saginaw as a result of an agreement between them and John Fisk, a landowner in neighboring Ottawa County. The town's name derived from Colonel George Washington's hometown of Georgetown in Kentucky - which had been turned into a military post by General Anthony Wayne during the War of 1812. In 1840, the post office was renamed Benton after General Andrew Jackson's campaign against Native Americans in that year. In 1846-47 when Detroit became an incorporated city it purchased some property east of downtown for $5 per acre from Elijah Green and he donated it to become what is now Downtown Detroit with a Canal Street running along its centerline (now Woodward Avenue). That same year also saw the arrival of Henry Ford as one of several entrepreneurs who started up successful businesses inDetroit at that time including leather tanning company; bicycle workshop; cigar factory; printing press; ice cream parlor and more! In 1850-51 when Detroit experienced another population increase due to silk production coming overland from China through Indiana via Grand Rapids then westward through Livonia on the main line train known as "the White Train" locals set up business near where Piquette Avenue meets Fort Wayne Road today called "Ford City". This area later became known as Dearborn Heights thanks to Edward Dicken Sr., president & CEO (and son-in-law)of DuPont & Company who purchased large tracts here beginning around 1907 including most notably Elmwood Avenue which runs today parallel to I-75 just south of Park Row Shopping Center! Ida Bogan once said "What comes over the top goes away". So true when looking back at our history here at Benton Harbor!
