Benton Harbor is a city in Benzie County, Michigan, United States. The population was 11,822 at the 2010 census. Benton Harbor was founded in 1836 by John Benton and his brother James as the town of "Benton Harbour". It became a city in 1951. The first settler in what would become Benton Harbor was John Benton, who arrived from Kentucky in 1836. He built a cabin on the north bank of the Grand River and named it "Benton Harbour". In 1840, he married Anna Maria McNamara and had two children: John McNamara Bendon (1841-1926) and James McNamara Bendon (1846-1920). In 1850, John and Anna Bendon bought land on the south bank of the river opposite their original cabin to build a larger house. They named their new home "Dormont". The Bendons continued to live there until they sold it in 1868 to George Stephenson for $812 USD. In 1865, George Stephenson donated land to make way for an east–west street called State Street which became part of what is now downtown Benton Harbor. In 1871, John Hendricksen moved into what is now downtown Benton Harbor from Norway with his family and started trading goods with Indians along State Street. When he died young in 1872, his wife took over his business. She operated it until her death in 1907; after her death one of her daughters ran it until 1954 when it passed hands again through several families until it came into the hands of current owner Neil Burchill in 2006 who has kept it running ever since During World War II many people worked at various munitions factories located near or within town limits including Anheuser Busch Brewery on Michigan Avenue just south of downtown which produced beer for military use It should be noted that although most residents are products of local culture/history there are also significant numbers coming from other parts of Michigan or even other states within USA during this time period such as truck driver Harry Kunkel who served three years active duty during WWII working at Ford Motor Company's Highland Park Assembly Plant
