Benton Harbor is a city in the Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 12,731 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Muskegon County government. Benton Harbor is bordered by Canton to the north, Ionia to the east, and Grand Traverse Bay to the south. The first settlement in what became Benton Harbor was made on June 6, 1836 by Captain John Atherton and his family while they were exploring what would become Muskegon County. They built a cabin on an island in grand Traverse Bay and named it "Atherton's Island". In 1839, Captain Solomon Wheeler established a post office at Benton Harbor and started trading with the Indians. In 1840 he laid out a town site that included present-day downtown Benton Harbor and other parts of today's town boundaries. On July 24, 1846, President James K. Polk issued Executive Order 9271 which ordered all Dakota people living west of US 11 from moving into eastern Michigan because of fears their presence might begin a war between Great Lakes tribes and newly organized states east of US 11. The order led to many families leaving their homes in western Michigan for new opportunities in Minnesota or Iowa where they could find work on farms or create new lives as farmers’ children or husbands/wives; some never returned home again after leaving their families behind. Captain John Atherton founded another post office at Benton Harbor on October 1st 1850 (the first post office west of Detroit). This original post office was destroyed by fire on May 3rd 1865 but was rebuilt 7 days later under same name with new porches around its facade. On February 20th 1897 Captain George Stephenson lost control of his boat while sailing through Grand Traverse Bay near today's downtown Benton Harbour only hours before his death having had been drinking when he left shore for dinner; he was buried at Battle Creek National Cemetery near Mantonville Illinois next to General George Armstrong Custer including one Battlefield Axe donated by local resident Mrs Fentress Coleman

The first European to sight Benton Harbor was Giovanni da Verrazzano on July 8, 1596 when he charted it as "Bay de la Hague" on his voyage from Spain to North America. In 1797, John Stevens discovered and named it after General George Washington's home state of Virginia, but no settlement or development took place until 1827 when David Denny built a lumber mill there and started farming around it. The town was incorporated as a village in 1837 and became a city in 1871 when it annexed the neighboring towns of Bay City and Grand Rapids. In 1907, an electric power plant was built in Benton Harbor by Detroit Edison Company subsidiary Western Electric Company. It provided electricity for many local businesses until its closure in 1957. The harbor has been used for both commercial fishing and recreational boating since at least 1800; during World War II, Zalom Fish Products Corporation produced seafood here from their Point Gratiot production site north of downtown while other companies such as Jardine Matheson produced munitions at Point Defiance Naval Ammunition Plant acrossriver nears downtown (now part of Midland Park).
