Gun lights have been a part of the local community in Benton Harbor, Michigan for many years. The first gun light was installed on a building in 1892 and the first practical shooting weapon was an ancient muzzleloader. In 1924, the first law enforcement officer in Benton Harbor equipped with a handgun received his training from Captain John A. Grosse of the Michigan State Police. This equipment included a holster and gun belt with pistol grip to provide protection while on duty. In 1933, Mayor Harry J. Byrnes authorized the installation of nightlights on public property in Benton Harbor to improve safety for residents and officers during their nighttime hours. The city also purchased two handguns from Rock Island Armory to be used as police weapons within the city limits. Benton Harbor is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census, up from 8,799 at the 2000 census. Benton Harbor is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Benton Harbor was Nicholas Karemowsky on July 6, 1827. He and his family were pioneers in this area and are credited with being one of the first to grow wheat and corn hereabouts. Benton Harbor became a town on March 3, 1855, when it was annexed by Grand Rapids. The name Benton Harbor comes from John Denton's grocery store which stood on Brush Creek (now Buffalo Road). The first post office in what is now Benton Harbor was established there on February 17, 1865; it was discontinued operation on October 1, 1906 because of the Great Depression. The present day downtown area of Benton Harbor began to take shape around 1900 when farmers started moving into this new area to set up their farms and homesteads near where today's streets intersected Brush Creek Drive and Monroe Street/Allee Avenue (now Gratiot Avenue). In 1910-1911 three square blocks east of Main Street were developed as an Italianate style shopping district known as "the Loop" due to its many stores located along Gratiot Avenue between Monroe and Brush Streets; these days mostLoop businesses are gone but some still use that name including Fransisco’s Pizza which opened in 1974 inside what is currently called Joe’s Place restaurant complex off Gratiot Avenue just east of Main Street (formerly Union Terminal Place). This development coincided with a period of growth for Benton Harbour proper as well – annexations followed soon after by other towns within easy reach such as Hollandtown (1914), Eastpointe (1920), Southfield Township (1921), Clinton Township (1925) and even further southward reaching Howell Township before finally exiting into Michigan again at Inkster Township boundary line in 1930! This continued pattern until 1937 when all but two outlying towns – Hollandtown & Eastpointe – merged into Grand Rapids proper! It wasn't until 1957 that another annexation occurred - this time to Hollandtown & Eastpointe creating what would become West Pointe Township which remains today an independent township despite lying within grand rapids city limits! By then most residents had either moved away or left for greener pastures elsewhere so only about 10% remain today within downtown core… . . . . .

In 1881, it became a part of Michigan. As Michiganders began moving away from farmland to the cities during the Progressive Era, Benton Harbor continued to grow. Today, it is one of the most populous cities in Michigan. Benton Harbor has seen many changes over its history. Its original name was "Cameron's Landing." It was renamed after Simon Cameron in 1881 when he became governor of Michigan. The town received its current name in 1924 after General John J Pershing said "the place should be known as Benton Harbor because there is an abundance of huckleberries hereabouts" (Fowler). In1824, Simon Cameron and other businessmen established Benton Harbor on the banks of the Great Lakes just north of present day Lansingburgh Township. The town quickly grew due to the lumber industry and its location on the great lakes which made it an ideal spot for businesses such as mills, warehouses and factories. In 1881, with increased population growth along with new transportation options available thanks to railroads and automobiles, Benton Harbor became a part of Michigan under Governor Alvan Fuller Griggs giving it official recognition (Fowler). Today, Benton Harbour is one of Michigan’s most populous cities with over 2 million residents within its boundaries making it home to a varietyof businesses including technology companies such as Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp., Google LLC and Amazon Web Services; retail giants Macy’s Incorporated, Sears Holdings Corporation and JCPenney Inc.; professional services firms KPMG LLP & Deloitte LLP; real estate developers James Hardin Jr & Associates; as well as numerous smaller businesses including media companies Crain’s Detroit Business & MLive Media Group; hotel chains Marriott International & Hyatt Regency® ; foodservice providers Aramark Holdings Incorporated ; engineering firms AECOM Plc.—and more (Fowler 9-11).
Benton Harbor is located in the Michigan town of Bay City, about 25 miles north of Lansing. The harbor was founded by the Huron people in 1795, and became a center for shipbuilding and commerce. In 1824, it was renamed after General James K. Polk, who had been president that year. The city grew rapidly during the late 19th century, thanks to its position as an important shipping port and its access to the open water of Lake Erie. However, development slowed during World War II, due to wartime restrictions on shipping.
