Benton Harbor is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kent County. The population was 25,521 at the 2010 census, up from 24,834 at the 2000 census. It is the second most populous city in Kent County after Saginaw Township. The first known settler in Benton Harbor was Levi Coffin, who arrived in 1814 with his family from Connecticut. The town began to form around 1800 when settlers started moving into what is now Benton Harbor from nearby Ottawa and Detroit townships. In 1807, Henry Kugelounis founded Saginaw Township on an bluff overlooking the harbor as a trading post for local Native Americans. By 1830, many residents of Saginaw Township had moved to Benton Harbor because of its central location and good water quality for fishing and livestock raising. In 1837, George Stephenson built a flour mill on Grand River just north of downtown Benton Harbor; this became one of the largest mills in Michigan and one of the first flour mills to be built in what is now Michigan. The mill produced wheat flour until 1915 when it switched to production of soybean oil products. In 1850, John Butterfield established a sawmill on Ontario Street just east of downtown Benton Harbor; this became one of butterfield's earliest businesses and continued operation until 1965 when it merged with other butterfield businesses to form First Chicago Corporation (FCO). In 1865, Stephen Foster opened a hotel called "The Star" on Front Street near where he later developed Midtown Detroit Center; this hotel continued operation until 1984 when it was replaced by Renaissance Place Hotel across Woodward Avenue from Water Tower Place mall which also continues operations today as Sheraton Lansing Best Western Hotel & Conference Center. In 1911-12, industrialist Augustus Butler established what is now known as Butler Manufacturing Company Inc., which manufactured radios and television sets among other items including automobiles during that time period before merging with Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1945 to become Wayne Motors Incorporated (WMI), which remains inactive today but still owns portions Of Butler Manufacturing Company property within Grand Rapids suburb Castleton Heights northeast of downtown Grosse Pointe Park

Benton Harbor’s history is closely intertwined with that of nearby Detroit: both towns were founded by pioneers who came to central Michigan looking for opportunities beyond their small villages back home. In 1837, Ishmael Benton arrived at what is now Saginaw Township while seeking land grants from the federal government; he soon found himselfimporting goods and passengers through his trading post here into Wayne County (now Inkster). Sally Benton followed suit two years later – she had been widowed after her husband’s death in a hunting accident – but her widowhood did not stop her from starting a business selling horses and buggies along Michigan Avenue near today’s Cass Corridor Shopping Center. The couple quickly amassed an impressive inventory of property here – including what is now downtown Benton Harbor – which they sold off over time to support their expanding business operations.
