Benton Harbor, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Benton County. The population was 20,811 at the 2010 census. It is home to the United States Navy's Naval Air Station Earhart which is also home to both Kingman Army Ammunition Plant and Munitions Research Laboratory. The first guns used in America were made here in 1795 by Captain John Stroud of Detroit for use against Indians on the lower peninsula. When Pontiacs burned down Detroit in 1809, Captain Stroud lost all his property excepting his cannons. In 1836, General James Kossuth occupied Benton Harbor and established Fort Michilimackinac as a military post on Mackinac Island to protect Upper Peninsula settlers from Native Americans. In 1839, when territorial officials re-established civil government here they ordered that no more cannons be fired at sea until after Congress had passed an act authorizing such cannon fire during Indian Wars fought between United States forces and Indian nations over land claims dating back centuries. The first gunnery school on this site was organized in 1840 by Major John Dickey with instruction given to local militiamen in how to operate American firearms including target shooting, artillery practice, and siege warfare using old cannon salvaged from British ships off Holland Island near Chicago.. The school moved to its present location on Fort Recovery in 1865 where it remains today providing training for law enforcement officers across the country as well as armed guard duty throughout Michigan congressional districts 2-5

In 1814, George Stephenson built a railroad from Detroit to Grand Rapids and Benton Harbor became one of its stations. In 1826, an Exchange Telegraph Station was built here and served as a communication link between Detroit and other parts of Michigan and Ohio. In 1827–28, an American settlement called Amherstburg was established here by fur traders looking for new markets for their products such as beaver pelts. It quickly grew into a small town with about 200 residents when it burned down in 1831 due to a fire caused by lightning during a thunderstorm that also destroyed nearby homes and businesses. The Towne Ford Bridge over the Ottawa River crossing from Amherstburg to Benton Harbor opened on September 4, 1907 as part of then-new State Highway 516; this bridge connected both towns together geographically until 1959 when US Highway M-1 replaced it eastbound while westbound traffic crossed at village hall acrossriver before rejoining SH516 at bypass gate just north of downtown which led directly to I-94 through Downtown Lansing where most people lived today before connecting back south onto M-1 just past exit 66/Milepost Road before ending at US Hwy 12 coming out intoMIrtytown proper During World War II many local manufacturers made war supplies including munitions plants like Canning Works which produced munitions like food storage cans filled with explosives used against enemy targets
