Benton Harbor is a city in the Michigan counties of Lake, Ottawa, and Macomb. The population was 509 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the St. Clair River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa). The name "Benton Harbor" comes from two early settlers, John Benton and his brother Isaac Benton, who named their community after their old home county in England. The first permanent settler in what is now Benton Harbor was John Forester in 1795. He began to clear land along the river for a future town site and built a cabin on what is now Saginaw Street. In 1812 he sold his holdings to Captain David Ross for $4,000 dollars which allowed him to begin developing this area into an important fur-trading center during the American Revolution. Captain Ross founded Fort Dearborn as part of his effort to protect Detroit from British forces during the war and later became one of America's richest men. He also donated land to build what would become Lansing Community College today. After suffering heavy losses during the war, Captain Ross decided to return home to England but continued trading with various Native American nations until his death in 1827 at age 73 years old. In 1831 Governor Simon Cameron appointed George Stephenson as acting governor due to difficulties caused by Indian hostilities in that year's election cycle; Stephenson quickly repaired infrastructure damage sustained by Battle of Traverse City while leading Ulysses S Grant's army against General Tecumseh's force at Ford’s Theatre near Detroit proper on September 16th – one day before Christmas present for that year’s United States federal elections - thus becoming onlythe 5th governor of Michigan born outside its borders since statehood in 1835 During Stephenson’s administration actions were taken that helped spur development including: construction of Navy Yard within town limits; passage of acts authorizing transportation improvements through town lots connecting Detroit with points north (and later east) including Toronto via Ionia Bridge; establishment within town limits of a Board Of Health charged with overseeing public health concerns arising out of merchant traffic on or around Big Creek falls; donation by George Washington Carver Sr., owner/operator thereof (now known as Carver Park), total acreage comprising 21 acres south side lot #7 upon purchase from Reverend Elijah Burchardt totaling $2,500 for use as parkland/grasslands adjoining Mackinac Island National Park thenceforth called “Carver Park” hereafter While Stephenson was Acting Governor many new residences were erected such as Queen Anne’s House constructed by Jno Copley after approval from then-Governor Cassius Clay . Many notable people associated with this period include: James Kapp “Old James” Caldwell who served 2 terms consecutively from1831-1835 & afterwards represented 1st District censure against Andrew Johnson & ran for U.S Senate 3 times also serving 1 term commencing July 24th 1830 thru November 6th 1833 both times defeating Aaron Burr each time 4ths vote required then decision made not To run again . Known locally today simply as “The Accused” . [1]

Benton Harbor is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Lake Huron shoreline about 20 miles west of Detroit. The population was 17,622 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Grand Rapids-Kalkaska Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of Benton Harbor were a group of Potawatomi Indians who had moved from their traditional hunting and gathering grounds in central Indiana to what is now eastern Michigan in 1796. They were followed by settlers from Illinois, Kentucky, and other states during the 19th century; many of these men joined forces with local Native Americans to resist white settlement policies and protect their land and way of life. In 1836, after being passed down through his family for generations, George Stephenson offered to donate 2 square miles (5 km²) of land along the east bank of Lake Huron to Benton Harbor as part of a plan to create a new city. The town's founding members included John Smeaton, James Fenton, Amos Kendall and others who had come overland from Ohio or boats during this period; they Named their town "Promontory" after Penobscot Bay south of Bostonport on which he had been born. The city was built around two large wharves that served as its commercial center; these wharves remain extant today as part of downtown Benton Harbor's architecture and popular tourist attractions such as the USS Constitution Museum and USS Victory Museum shipyards where steamboats used to navigate lower Lansing River before it was diverted into Superior River near present day Wixom. The first school in Benton Harbor was opened in 1837 by Reverend Drury Price when students from nearby Shiawassee Female Academy attended classes here until 1848 when it moved to Whitefish Point Schoolhouse on Whitefish Point Rd.; later renamed Academy Hall & High School). A fire destroyed much OFH&E property north Of Hwy 4 & Wharf Rd within 2yrs aft #oftown’s incorporation date but started out small “Pine Bluff” fire 3 years prior (1839),destroyed homey buggies used for ferrying goods across river
