The river formed approximately 350 million years ago when two tectonic plates collided, causing folding and faulting of the earth's surface. settlement began near what is now downtown Benton Harbor after Henry Ford created a small town called Dearborn Heights there in 1913 to serve his employees who were then employed by Ford Motor Company across town at their Dearborn Plantation (now Gratiot Avenue). At first, settlers primarily came from Ireland and Germany but over time other European immigrants arrived as well including Italians, Poles and Japanese people who worked at various factories within or adjacent to Benton Harbor until World War II when all manufacturing stopped due to war-time restrictions on importation of German products. After World War II, many local businesses closed down because of competition from larger competitors such as Detroit Edison and GMDetroit; however, some companies such as American Motors Corporation (AMC) retains a significant presence today thanks to its location on Gratiot Avenue just east of Interstate 94; AMC has been headquartered there since 1937. Additionally, several large engineering firms such as United States Steel Corporation (USS) have their headquarters hereincluding Pratt & Whitney Limited (P&W), Lockheed Martin Aerospace Co., Inc.(LMA), Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory(JHU APL), Northrop Grumman Corp.(NRO)), Honeywell International Inc.(HONEYWELL)and Siemens AG (Siemens). In recent years much attention has focused on downtown redevelopment which includesopening up many historic buildings/zones for new development including an arts district known as "The Ghetto" that opened up in late 2009 following a $30 million investment by Mayor Carl Stokes with help from private developers led by David Abrams; this revitalization area features new restaurants, nightlife venues and art galleries throughout downtown while preserving old brick warehouses along South Broadway street which date back to 1853 when many early entrepreneurs founded their businesses hereabouts including John D'Angelo co-founder of Parma Brewing Company(later renamed Associazione ItalianaDraft Energia e il Parco della Racca)(AIDP). In terms of demographics: The median age in Bendon Harbor was 47 years old according to 2010 census data released by City Hall; 17% of residents were below 25 years old according to2010 US Census data release; 9% were under 30 years old according to 2010 census data release; 3% were over 65 years old according to2010 US Census data release.; While white residents make up 60% or more of bendon harbor's population based upon 2000 US Census data release (<5%), black residents make up 10-15%of population based upon2010 US Census data release (<5%). As compared with other Midwestern U S cities like Flint or Lansing where percentages are around 50%, Greater Detroit suburbs like Warren or Inkster where percentages are closer to 70%, Bendon Harbor shows an increased percentage especially among ages 25-44 year olds (>50%). Within racial groups: African Americans account for 14%-20%of total population while Latinos make up 2%-4%. Asian Americans make up 1%-2%. Benton Harbor is a small town in the Kalamazoo-Lansing, Michigan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 7,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wenatchee-Kalamazoo, MI Combined Statistical Area. The first settlers in Benton Harbor were two brothers named John and Jeremiah Benton. They arrived from England in 1814 and erected a log cabin on the banks of the river they called "the Bay." The Bentons were joined by their brother George and his wife Hannah in 1819. The community grew rapidly because of its good location on the bay and its easy access to water resources. By 1830, there were 8 houses and 30 residents. In 1835, Captured Indians offered goods for sale at $1 per pound to those who would take them home with them when they surrendered. Out of this offer, only three people took advantage and sold their goods back to the Indian Chiefs before being killed or scalped. In 1836, Henry Dearborn built a sawmill on what is now known as Dearborn Street in what was then known as Benton Harbor proper. That same year also saw the founding of a religious congregation called First Presbyterian Church which had been organized by Reverend Samuel Morse Sr.. In 1840, Captain John Haggerty founded a wharfage company that served both local fishermen and ships chartered out by various companies shipping goods between Detroit and points northward along Lake Superior In 1850, Benton Harbor became an incorporated village under state law due to its growth as an agricultural center supplying products such as flour to local merchants in Lansing On July 1st 1897, Benton Harbor merged with neighboring Sault Ste Marie into one municipality under state government form known as "Grand Rapids County." At that time it had a population of 17,850 people During World War II (1939-1945), major relief operations took place here including Operation Crossroads which delivered foodstuffs and other supplies to Allied forces located behind Nazi lines
Benton Harbor is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,531 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Washtenaw County and the second-largest city in Michigan after Detroit. The first permanent settler in Benton Harbor was John Jacob Astor, who founded what is now called Astoria on the southern bank of the Huron River in 1814. In 1817, he sold his interest in Astoria to Simon Stroud for $1,000 cash. The new owners built a log cabin and began to trade with other Indiana settlers. By 1830, they had a store and several buildings. In 1834, Lansing businessman Amos Kendall bought land near where Benton Harbor now stands for $6 per acre (2 hectares). He developed it into a town named after him – Lansing – with three stores and 150 residents by 1840. In 1849, he sold it to George Stephenson for $8 per acre (3 hectares). Stephenson turned it into an industrial town with mills and warehouses built; it became one of the largest towns in Michigan. During World War II, Benton Harbor played an important role as a port of embarkation for military personnel coming through southeastern Michigan during World War II. The harbor also hosted Project Manned Maneuvering Unit training exercises from 1945 to 1948 when these were conducted out of private yards adjacent to the harbor entrance which later became White Sands Missile Range until 1997 when they were transferred to Offutt Air Force Base Nebraska
