Benton Harbor is a small town in the Kalamazoo-Portage County Metropolitan Statistical Area of Michigan. It is located on the mouth of the Benton River, about halfway between Lansing and Grand Rapids. The population was 7,423 at the 2010 census. These glasses were known as "The Conte Glasses." In 1868, Jens Jensen began making eyeglasses using a new type of lens called an Apochromat microscope glass which permitted users to view objects up close without having to wear any glasses or goggles. It is the county seat of Benton County and home to one of the largest electric streetcar systems in America. The first permanent settlers in what is now Benton Harbor were three families who crossed the Rouge River from Canada on July 4, 1837, during what is known as "The Great Migration." The town was founded by Lyman Beall and His Party on November 1, 1838, when they named it after James Kappenberger, an early settler in that area. During its early years, Benton Harbor served as a small trading post where goods were brought downriver by boat or wagon train from Detroit and other parts of Michigan. In 1845, it became part of Lansing County when that county was formed following the admission of Michigan as a U.S. state. However, because Lansing County was mainly agricultural land with few natural resources (and because there were no roads or bridges), Benton Harbor continued to serve primarily as a shipping point for goods destined for larger metropolitan areas such as Detroit and Ann Arbor until about 1900 when railroads arrived and began to upend traditional transportation patterns within Michigan's rural counties. In 1907-1908 work began on building what would become known as "the world's first electric streetcar system", which linked downtown Benton Harbor with surrounding villages and townships using trackage originally built for horse-drawn cars dating back to 1875. The network operated continuously until 1938 when it was replaced by buses riders could take directly to their destinations without going through central Benton Harbor or any other local stops; this change helped make Benton Harbor one of the most easily accessible cities in America for people living outside large metropolitan areas at that time. Today, much of what made Benton Harbour so special has been lost within its boundaries due to suburban development; however, some remnants remain including several popular amusement park attractions (including LEGOLAND) as well as two major shopping malls – One inside Interstate M-I-T – which together accommodate over 150 stores totaling over $2 billion in sales annually!
