Benton Harbor has been a center of ammo production for over 100 years. Benton Harbor is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 66,912 at the 2010 census, making it the 14th most populous city in Michigan and the second most populous city in Wayne County after Detroit. It is part of the Lansing–Warren–Dearborn, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Prior to European settlement, Benton Harbor was an Iroquois village on the east side of Lake Huron. The first Europeans to visit what is now Benton Harbor were French traders and missionaries who explored this area during their 1667-1668 voyage along the Great Lakes as part of a larger expedition led by René-Jacques Marquette. They named this place "Nantes" ( meaning "township"), after Nantes, France. In 1701, while on his subsequent mapping expedition along the lower Great Lakes, French explorer La Salle discovered that there was a portage leading from Georgian Bay into Lake Huron at what is now Benton Harbor; he called this site "Port de la Hague". In 1807, General James Ketchum built Fort Michilimackinac on Michilimackinac Island as part of his campaign against Native Americans living near Green Bay and Sticksville River west of present-day Milwaukee; he also built Fort Dearborn for protection against Indian attacks from that direction. The town began to grow rapidly due to overcrowding at Michilimackinac and Dearborn for military purposes and commercial activities around Ketchum's fortifications; by 1821, it had become one of the largest cities in Upper Michigan with a population over 7500 people. By 1840, thanks to various campaigns led by Lt.-Governor John Prentice Mott under US President Andrew Jackson including operations against Native American threats along its eastern border such as large land grants given in lieu of war hostilities The opening of Mackinaw City Limits which extended from Battle Creek south through Flint intopresent day Clinton Township created demand for new water supplies closer to residents which led to development around Flint’s rapids including two important canals: Canal Rouge (now known as Grand Traverse Canal)and Canal de Sault (Canal du Sault). This new development caused rapid growth within Kingston Township adjacent to Flint because access to these valuable resources made Kingston an attractive market town for entrepreneurs looking for new markets or additions to existing businesses

The history of Benton Harbor begins with Alexander Benton who arrived in 1820 from Scotland. He began farming in what is now Benton Harbor and built the first house there in 1824. Eleven years later he married Jane and they started their own farm together. They would continue to live there until their death in 1871. Their son John then moved the family to Muskegon Heights where they continued farming until 1850 when they decided to move back to what is now Benton Harbor. They would again establish themselves in what is now Benton Harbor for many years before moving into other businesses including a flour mill and lumber company which were both successful but closed down during the Great Depression. In 1925, after becoming a city,benton harbor experienced rapid growth due to immigration from Ireland which increased its workforce by 50%. Today over 10% of all residents are Irish- Americans who have made Bendon Harbour one of the most diverse cities on Long Island within commuting distance for many residents from all over America as well as Europe!
On July 24, 1834, Benton Harbor was chartered as a town by the Michigan Territory. It became a city in 1837. The first post office was established in Benton Harbor on October 3, 1837. The first store in the city opened on February 23, 1840.
