In 1836, John Dickey founded Maple Grove Township in what is now easternBayCity. In 1830s Bay City had a population of only 50 people when it became a trading post for fur traders operating along the upper Great Lakes region. In 1837, Nicholas Grosse built one of the first large mills in northwestern Michigan and started production of flour, bacon and other products from what is now downtownBayCity. Grosse's successors continued to produce flour until World War II when they switched to cotton production due to increased Demand for war supplies during World War II
