The city also hosted the annual "Wine Tasting" event during summertime for nearly fifty years until 2007 when organisers replaced it with a golf tournament instead because of concerns about environmental damage caused by vintage wine production methods dating back to Prohibition era

The first steamboats were built in Bay City by entrepreneur Joseph Henry Lawrence in 1840s; these boats transported goods upriver to Detroit or other ports for shipment to Europe. Lawrence also built an early fireboat called "Hercules" which served as a local rescuer during both World War I and II when vessels running into trouble capsized near downtown Bay City. During this time period, many technological advances were made in Bay City including electric lights that became standard throughout the region starting with streetlights back then; automatic sprinklers that allowed homeowners to water their lawns without taking any time off work; central heating/cooling that arrived during this time period through various oil companies providing natural gas infrastructure for new homes; and cable TV becoming common place during this time period as well (though not ubiquitous). Bay City experienced some economic declines during prohibition but slowly regained its lost ground beginning around 1950 as more people moved into surrounding areas such as Howell and Southfield followed later that decade with increased job opportunities due to postwar booms across the Great Lakes region (the auto industry being one major driver).
