The name means "bay" or "shoreline." The first European to visit Bay City was John Beare in 1824 while on his way to work as a surveyor for the Michigan Land Company. He named it after his home port of Plymouth, England. In 1830, post office activity began with an initial shipment of mail from Portsmouth, New Hampshire via Bay City and arrived on October 9th 1830 by sea from Grand Rapids with Reverend Drury Jourdan as its first Postmaster/First Classman The town rapidly grew due to its location on both shorelines - one near Ann Arbor and one near Mackinac Island - which made it easy for settlers to find businesses and transportation links to other parts of the country. By 1840, Bay City had over 100 residents etta consisted largely of logwood posts that were used by Native Americans for their fishing coves during wintertime when they could not access good spawning grounds closer upriver
